This, having cultivated and abided, is the eighth liberation. Those eight liberations, and the nine successive abidings in meditative absorption. What are the nine? They are as follows: He, secluded from desires, secluded from evil and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, with joy and bliss, the first dhyana, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, with inner tranquility, the mind becoming unified, without initial application, without sustained application, born of concentration, with joy and bliss, the second dhyana, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, detached from attachment to joy, endowed with mindfulness, clearly abiding in equanimity, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones say of him, "Mindful, he experiences pleasure, abiding in equanimity," the third dhyana, without joy, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, having abandoned pleasure, and having abandoned suffering, and with the previous mental pleasure and displeasure also having ceased, neither pleasure nor suffering, with equanimity and mindfulness completely purified, the fourth dhyana, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, in every way completely transcending the perception of form, with the perceptions of resistance having ceased, not attending to the perceptions of diversity, (thinking) "Space is infinite," the sphere of infinite space, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, in every way completely transcending the sphere of infinite space, (thinking) "Consciousness is infinite," the sphere of infinite consciousness, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, in every way completely transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, (thinking) "There is nothing at all," the sphere of nothingness, having approached, cultivates and abides. He, in every way completely transcending the sphere of nothingness, having approached, cultivates and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He, in every way completely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, having approached, cultivates and abides in the cessation of perception and feeling. Thus, the successive abidings in meditative absorption.
