will rejoice, saying, 'We should make offerings and respect to this one.' The gods of the Thirty-three (Trāyastriṃśa), as well as the gods of Yāma, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmita-vaśavartin, will also rejoice. In this way, the ranks of the Asuras will diminish, and the ranks of the gods will increase. These gods will rejoice, saying, 'We should pray for him to attain enlightenment and turn the wheel of Dharma.' The gods of the Brahma realm, as well as the Śubhakṛtsna, Bṛhatphala, Avṛha, Atapa, Sudṛśa, Sudarśana, and Akaniṣṭha gods, will also rejoice. Son of Śāradvatī, when a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom and increases through the six perfections, the sons and daughters of the Bodhisattva vehicle will also rejoice, thinking, 'We will become the parents, siblings, spouses, children, friends, ministers, relatives, companions, and spiritual friends of this great being.' When a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva lacks a retinue of consorts, the Four Great Kings, the gods belonging to the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three (Trāyastriṃśa), Yāma, Tuṣita, Nirmāṇarati, Paranirmita-vaśavartin, the Brahma realm, the Brahma-pāriṣadya, Mahābrahman, Brahma-purohita, Ābhāsvara, Parīttābha, Apramāṇābha, Śubhakṛtsna, Śubha, Parīttaśubha, Apramāṇaśubha, Bṛhatphala, Avṛha, Atapa, Sudṛśa, Sudarśana, and Akaniṣṭha gods will also rejoice. This is because they practice Brahmacharya to establish beings in Bodhi, and they are not encompassed by conditioned phenomena. They will aspire in this way: 'Since I first generated the mind, I have practiced Brahmacharya; may I never engage in non-Brahmacharya.' Why is that? Because attachment to desire does not lead to rebirth in the Brahma world.

If I interrupt, what need to mention the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment? Therefore, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should manifest and practice Brahmacharya, and attain perfect complete enlightenment in the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. He should not fail to practice Brahmacharya. After he spoke thus, the venerable son of Sharadvati said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, is it necessary for the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva to avoid father, mother, maidservant, son, and daughter?" The Bhagavan said: "Sharadvati's son, some Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas need to avoid father and mother, but do not need son, daughter, and wife. Some need to avoid father, mother, wife, son, and daughter. Sharadvati's son, some Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, from the moment they generate the first thought, correctly uphold Brahmacharya, and remain youthful until they manifest enlightenment in the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Some Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, with skillful means, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, enjoy the five desirable qualities, manifest from within the retinue of wives, and manifest enlightenment in the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment. Sharadvati's son, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the profound Prajnaparamita, is free from the afflictions of desire. Some, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, also show the enjoyment of desirable qualities, but in reality, there is no enjoyment. Sharadvati's son, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician, who is well-versed in the mantras and methods of combining illusions, can manifest the five desirable qualities and show himself playing, rejoicing, and enjoying these five desirable qualities. Sharadvati's son, what do you think about this? Does the magician and the disciple of the magician truly enjoy these five desirable qualities?" He replied: "Bhagavan, it is not so."

English

It is not. The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, similarly, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who are highly trained in the illusion of the Great Vehicle, who have excellently attained conduct through the Dharma-nature which is like an illusion, even those who are free from all defilements, also show the enjoyment of desirable qualities by the power of great compassion, in order to fully ripen sentient beings to be tamed. They are not associated with these, nor will they fall because of them. Sharadvatiputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas in many ways point out the faults of desires. Desires are all-consuming. Desires are greatly despised. Desires are killers. Desires are enemies. Desires are adversaries. Desires are like a straw torch. Desires are like the fruit of the Kimpaka. Desires are like the edge of a sword. Desires are like a pile of firebrands. Desires are like poisonous leaves. Desires are like spit. Desires are like unclean vomit. Thus, Sharadvatiputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, although they fully understand desires, in order to ripen those sentient beings who are not skillful, to cause them to be disgusted with the five desirable qualities, and to show the five desirable qualities closely in order to be separated from the five desirable qualities, they will not be intoxicated by them, nor will they be negligent, nor will they commit sinful deeds because of the cause of desire and the place of desire. After he had spoken thus, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not truly see a Bodhisattva, nor does he truly see the name of a Bodhisattva, nor does he truly see the conduct of a Bodhisattva.
