Therefore, it does not abide. What are the two? They are self-nature and absence of self-nature. Because of those two, there are no such fruits as where to abide, or by what to abide, or where one will abide. It does not even cling to joy for that reason alone. Why is that? Like this, I should not obtain the fruit of stream-enterer, I should not abide in it. I should not obtain the fruit of once-returner, I should not abide in it. I should not obtain the fruit of non-returner, I should not abide in it. I should not obtain the state of Arhat, I should not abide in it. I should not obtain the state of solitary Buddha, I should not abide in it. But I should awaken to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? From the time I first generated the mind, I have held close, and apart from generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I have not generated any other mind. Why is that? From the first ground, I have held close, and apart from generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I have not generated any other mind. From the second ground, I have held close, and apart from generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I have not generated any other mind.

Other than generating the mind of enlightenment, no other thoughts arose. From the eighth ground onwards, I have not generated any other thoughts except for generating the mind towards unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From the ninth ground onwards, I have not generated any other thoughts except for generating the mind towards unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From the tenth ground onwards, I have not generated any other thoughts except for generating the mind towards unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having entered the faultless conduct of a Bodhisattva, I thought, "I have not generated any other thoughts except for generating the mind towards unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without distraction, whether acting with body, speech, or mind, does nothing that is not done with the mind of enlightenment. That Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the mind of enlightenment, cultivates the path of enlightenment without distraction. Question: Bhagavan, if all dharmas are unborn, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivate the path of enlightenment? The Bhagavan replied: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. All dharmas are unborn. What is it like? Whatever does not manifestly assemble, that is precisely what all dharmas are unborn. Question: Bhagavan, then whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, is not the dharmata of dharmas abiding in suchness? The Bhagavan replied: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the nature of dharmas abides in suchness. For the sake of those who do not understand such a nature of dharmas, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the path of enlightenment, and by that path completely liberates beings from samsara. Question: Bhagavan, is it the case that enlightenment is attained through a path that has already arisen? The Bhagavan replied:
