The four truths have no essence. The four dhyanas are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the four dhyanas that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The four immeasurables are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the four immeasurables that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The four formless absorptions are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the four formless absorptions that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The eight liberations are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the eight liberations that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The nine successive abidings are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the nine successive abidings that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The doors of liberation, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, are neither combined nor separated. Why is that? Because, in this way, the doors of liberation, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, that are to be combined or separated have no essence. The superknowledges are neither combined nor separated.

It is so. What is the reason for that? It is because, like this, all the individual correct knowledges that are combined or should be distinguished have no self-nature. Great compassion does not combine or separate. What is the reason for that? It is because, like this, great compassion, which is combined or should be distinguished, has no self-nature. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha do not combine or separate. What is the reason for that? It is because, like this, the unshared qualities of the Buddha, which are combined or should be distinguished, have no self-nature. Asked: Blessed One, if there is no self-nature in any dharma that is combined or should be distinguished, then how can the perfection of wisdom, which bodhisattvas, great beings, should train in, be manifestly accomplished? If one does not train in the perfection of wisdom, bodhisattvas, great beings, cannot manifestly and completely awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Sharadvatiputra, it is just so, it is just so. Just as you have said, if one does not train in the perfection of wisdom, bodhisattvas, great beings, cannot manifestly and completely awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. But that is because of skillful means, and not because of unskillful means. Sharadvatiputra, if a bodhisattva, a great being, observes the self-nature of any dharma while practicing the perfection of wisdom, then he will also be attached to it. But if he does not observe, then what will he grasp as "This is form," "This is feeling," "This is perception," "This is formation," "This is consciousness"? These are the sense bases. These are the elements, earth, and so on. These are dependent origination. This is ignorance, this is formation, this is consciousness, this is name and form, this is the six sense bases, this is contact, this is feeling, this is craving, this is grasping, this is existence, this is birth, this is old age and death. This is the perfection of generosity, this is discipline.
