Eighth, these are called the eight liberations. What are the nine successive dwellings of abiding in cessation? Here, some, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, with joy and happiness, attain and abide in the first dhyana. With the cessation of initial application and sustained application, inwardly purified, with singleness of mind, without initial application and without sustained application, born of concentration, with joy and happiness, they attain and abide in the second dhyana. With detachment from joy, they abide in equanimity, mindful and with clear comprehension, experiencing happiness with the body, as the noble ones declare, abiding in equanimity, mindful, experiencing happiness, this is called the third dhyana, they attain and abide in the third dhyana. Having abandoned happiness and abandoned suffering, with the previous cessation of mental happiness and mental unhappiness, neither happy nor suffering, purified by equanimity and mindfulness, they attain and abide in the fourth dhyana. Completely transcending all perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, not attending to various perceptions, (thinking) space is infinite, they attain and abide in the sphere of infinite space. Completely transcending the sphere of infinite space, (thinking) consciousness is infinite, they attain and abide in the sphere of infinite consciousness. Completely transcending the sphere of infinite consciousness, (thinking) there is nothing at all, they attain and abide in the sphere of nothingness. Completely transcending the sphere of nothingness, they attain and abide in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Completely transcending the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, they attain and abide in the cessation of perception and feeling. This is called the nine successive dwellings of abiding in cessation. What are the ten all-encompassing spheres?
