Sixty-third, the Chapter on Characteristics. Sixty-third, the Chapter on Characteristics. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how can one distinguish among all dharmas, which are like dreams and without substance, whose very nature is emptiness by their own characteristics, and say, 'These are virtuous dharmas, these are non-virtuous dharmas, these are worldly dharmas, these are supramundane dharmas, these are defiled dharmas, these are undefiled dharmas, these are conditioned dharmas, these are unconditioned dharmas, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of stream-entry, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of once-returning, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of non-returning, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of Arhatship, these are the causes for realizing self-awakening, these are the causes for realizing unsurpassed perfect and complete awakening?' All dharmas are like echoes, like mirages, like illusions, like heat haze, like apparitions, without substance, whose very nature is emptiness by their own characteristics. How can one distinguish among these and say, 'These are virtuous dharmas, these are non-virtuous dharmas, these are worldly dharmas, these are supramundane dharmas, these are defiled dharmas, these are undefiled dharmas, these are conditioned dharmas, these are unconditioned dharmas, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of stream-entry, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of once-returning, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of non-returning, these are the causes for realizing the fruit of Arhatship, these are the causes for realizing self-awakening, these are the causes for realizing unsurpassed perfect and complete awakening?'"

Will be written. The Bhagavan declared: Subhuti, here, an uneducated common person also considers dreams to be real, and also considers the appearance of dreams to be real. They also consider sounds to be real, and also consider the hearing of sounds to be real. They also consider dizziness to be real, and also consider the appearance of dizziness to be real. They also consider illusions to be real, and also consider the appearance of illusions to be real. They also consider mirages to be real, and also consider the appearance of mirages to be real. They also consider transformations to be real, and also consider the appearance of transformations to be real. Therefore, they also consider dreams to be real, they also consider the appearance of dreams to be real, they also consider sounds to be real, they also consider the hearing of sounds to be real, they also consider dizziness to be real, they also consider the appearance of dizziness to be real, they also consider illusions to be real, they also consider the appearance of illusions to be real, they also consider mirages to be real, they also consider the appearance of mirages to be real, they also consider transformations to be real, they also consider the appearance of transformations to be real, and thus, with body, speech, and mind, they also manifestly create virtuous actions, and with body, speech, and mind, they also manifestly create non-virtuous actions. Similarly, with body, speech, and mind, they also manifestly create merit, non-merit, and unwavering actions. Therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in the emptiness that is beyond limits, the emptiness that is without beginning or end, and the two emptinesses, teaches the Dharma to sentient beings: These three realms are empty, and in this there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no formation, no consciousness, no aggregates, no realms, no sources. This is a dream, this is a sound, this is dizziness, this is an illusion, this is a mirage, this is a transformation. In this there are no aggregates, no realms, no sources. In this there is no dream, no appearance of dreams, no sound, no hearing of sounds, no dizziness, no appearance of dizziness, no illusion, no performance of illusions, no mirage, no appearance of mirages, no transformation, no performance of transformations. All these dharmas are unreal, the nature of unreal.

is yourself. However, you are those who perceive aggregates where there are no aggregates, perceive realms where there are no realms, and perceive sense bases where there are no sense bases. All these dharmas arise from the perverted dependent origination and are completely grasped by the maturation of karma. Why do you all perceive all dharmas as having substance when they have no substance? When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he skillfully liberates miserly beings from miserliness and engages them in the Perfection of Giving. The giving itself also becomes a cause for them to obtain great enjoyment. He moves them from that and engages them in the Perfection of Morality. The morality that is well taken also becomes a cause for them to be born in higher realms. He moves them from that and engages them in samadhi. That samadhi also becomes a cause for them to be born in the Brahma realm. He moves them from that and engages them in the first dhyana. Having moved from the first dhyana, he engages them in the second dhyana. Having moved from the second dhyana, he engages them in the third dhyana. Having moved from the third dhyana, he engages them in the fourth dhyana. Having moved from the fourth dhyana, he engages them in the sphere of infinite space. Having moved from the sphere of infinite space, he engages them in the sphere of infinite consciousness. Having moved from the sphere of infinite consciousness, he engages them in the sphere of nothingness. Having moved from the sphere of nothingness, he engages them in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He liberates them from giving and the inferior result of giving in many ways, and finally leads them to breathe out into the realm of nirvana without remainder. Destroys, establishes. He liberates them from morality and the result of morality in many ways, and finally leads them to nirvana without remainder.
