When practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, one perfects the Perfection of Moral Discipline, which is without characteristics. By perfecting this, one knows that all phenomena without characteristics are comprehended. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, they abide in the five aggregates of appropriation as being like a dream, like an echo, like the moon in water, like an optical illusion, like a magic trick, like a mirage, like a city of Gandharvas, and like an apparition. By abiding in the five aggregates of appropriation in this way, they perfect the Perfection of Patience, which is without characteristics. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in phenomena without characteristics and perfect the Perfection of Patience? Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva perfects the Perfection of Patience through two kinds of patience. What are the two? They are the patience of practice and the patience of understanding the Dharma. What is the patience of practice? From the arising of the first thought of enlightenment until abiding in the essence of enlightenment, if all sentient beings repeatedly come to a Bodhisattva Mahasattva and revile them, speak unpleasant words, or utter countless rude words, or pelt them with stones, strike them with weapons, or beat them, then that Bodhisattva Mahasattva, wishing to perfect the Perfection of Patience, does not generate even a little bit of agitated mind or harmful intent. Instead, towards those sentient beings, they think, "Alas! These sentient beings are tormented by the disease of afflictions. I will not generate a mind of hatred towards them. This is the result of my own having taken these aggregates that have become like enemies." Thus, they generate even more compassion towards them. Endowed with loving-kindness, having become compassionate, reflecting in this way, this is called the patience of practice. What is the patience of understanding the Dharma? If those sentient beings are also without an object of focus in ultimate reality, I

Or to revile, or to speak unpleasant words, or to utter unconsidered harsh words, or to strike with stones and sticks and inflict weapons, who would do such a thing? All conditioned phenomena are like illusions, false and unreal, dependent on conditions. Like the sky, they are devoid of self, sentient beings, life, goers, breakers, persons, individuals, powerful ones, and lords of power. All these discriminations arise from complete imputation. Who would revile, speak unpleasant words, utter unconsidered harsh words, strike with stones and sticks and inflict weapons on these? I take selflessness and ultimate emptiness as my basis, and I should not discriminate in this way. This is called the forbearance of understanding the nature of reality. Thus, one completely realizes and perfects the perfection of forbearance. By perfecting the perfection of forbearance, one obtains the forbearance of non-arising phenomena. Subhuti asked: "Bhagavan, what is called the forbearance of non-arising phenomena? What is abandoned in it? What is the wisdom in it?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, any dharma that does not have even a particle of arising is non-arising. What knows it is called forbearance. By knowing, one obtains the forbearance of non-arising phenomena." He asked: "Bhagavan, what is the forbearance of non-arising phenomena of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and what is the forbearance of non-arising phenomena of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas? What is the difference between these forbearances?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhuti, the wisdom and abandonment of the Stream-enterer is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The wisdom and abandonment of the Once-returner is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The wisdom and abandonment of the Non-returner is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The wisdom and abandonment of the Arhat is the forbearance of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The wisdom of the Solitary Buddha

I mean, whatever is abandoned is the patience of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti, is there a difference between that and the patience of a Hearer, a Solitary Buddha, and a Bodhisattva? Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, possessing such patience, overwhelms all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, abides in the patience of the non-arising of dharmas that arises from that maturation, practices the Bodhisattva path, and perfects the knowledge of the path itself. By perfecting that, he is inseparable from the thirty-seven dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and the samadhis of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. He is inseparable from the five superknowledges. Because he is inseparable from those superknowledges, he completely ripens sentient beings and completely purifies the Buddha-fields. Having completely ripened sentient beings and completely purified the Buddha-fields, he obtains omniscience with the wisdom of a single instant. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he perfects the Perfection of Signless Patience. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he abides in the five aggregates of appropriation that are like a dream, like an echo, like a moon in water, like an optical illusion, like a mirage, like a city of gandharvas, like an emanation, and he initiates the exertion of body and mind. With the exertion of body, he accomplishes supernormal powers, goes to the pure realms of all directions and intermediate directions, attends to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, benefits sentient beings, and completely purifies the Buddha-fields. With that exertion of body, having completely ripened sentient beings, he introduces and establishes them in the three vehicles. Subhuti, that
