The practice of remembering the deities. Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice remembering the Buddha? Subhuti, in this case, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not contemplate the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha in terms of form, does not contemplate in terms of feeling, does not contemplate in terms of perception, does not contemplate in terms of formations, and does not contemplate in terms of consciousness. Why is that? Because form is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Feeling is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Perception is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Formations are without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Consciousness is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Because of the absence of substance, one cannot remember the absence of substance. Why is that? The absence of remembrance and the absence of mental activity is the remembrance of the Buddha. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices remembering the Buddha, he does not contemplate the thirty-two major marks of a great person of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, does not contemplate the golden color of the body, does not contemplate the light extending one fathom, and does not contemplate the eighty minor marks. Why is that? Because the thirty-two major marks of a great person are without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. The golden color of the body is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. The light extending one fathom is without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. The eighty minor marks are without inherent nature. Whatever is without inherent nature is without substance. Because of the absence of substance, one cannot remember the absence of substance. Why is that? The absence of remembrance and the absence of mental activity is the remembrance of the Buddha.

Meditating on Recollecting the Buddha If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva meditates on recollecting the Buddha, then he should not recollect the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha's aggregate of morality, he should not recollect the aggregate of concentration, he should not recollect the aggregate of wisdom, he should not recollect the aggregate of liberation, he should not recollect the vision of the knowledge of liberation. Why is that? Because, for example, the aggregate of morality has no self-nature. Whatever has no self-nature is without substance. The aggregate of concentration has no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature is without substance. The aggregate of wisdom has no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature is without substance. The aggregate of liberation has no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature is without substance. The aggregate of the vision of the knowledge of liberation has no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature is without substance. Since there is no substance, one cannot recollect what is without substance. Why is that? Because without recollection and without mental engagement, that is recollecting the Buddha. Subhuti, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva meditates on recollecting the Buddha, then he should not recollect the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha's ten powers of the Tathagata, he should not recollect the four fearlessnesses, he should not recollect the four analytical knowledges, he should not recollect the great loving-kindness, he should not recollect the great compassion, he should not recollect the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha. Why is that? Because, for example, the ten powers of the Tathagata have no self-nature. Whatever has no self-nature, those are without substance. The four fearlessnesses have no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature, those are without substance. The four analytical knowledges have no self-nature, whatever has no self-nature, those are without substance.
