The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if it is said that all conditioned phenomena are merely names and signs, then for what reason do Bodhisattvas, great beings, say that they practice the practice of a Bodhisattva? Subhuti, it is indeed the case that all conditioned phenomena are merely names and signs, and names are empty of names, and signs are empty of signs. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, great beings, practice the practice of a Bodhisattva and attain all-knowingness. Having attained all-knowingness, they turn the wheel of Dharma. Having turned the wheel of Dharma, they completely liberate sentient beings from suffering through the three vehicles, and in names and signs, they do not see arising, they do not see ceasing, they do not see abiding, and they do not see change from abiding. They requested: Blessed One, do you speak of all-knowingness, all-knowingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti,

All-knowingness is said to be all-knowingness. Asked: Blessed One, if the Tathagata has spoken of all-knowingness, and briefly spoken of the knowledge of the aspects of the path, and the Tathagata has also spoken of all-knowingness, Blessed One, what is the difference between these three all-knowingnesses? What is the distinction? What is the difference? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the so-called all-knowingness is for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The knowledge of the aspects of the path is for the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. All-knowingness is for the Tathagata Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas. Asked: Blessed One, why is all-knowingness spoken of for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas? Why is the knowledge of the aspects of the path spoken of for the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas? Why is all-knowingness spoken of for the Tathagatas? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, as many external and internal dharmas as there are, all are known by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but not in all paths. Subhuti, if someone asks, "Why is the knowledge of the aspects of the path spoken of for the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas?" Subhuti, all paths should be practiced by the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. All paths should be known by the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, that is, as many paths as there are for the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and as many paths as there are for the Bodhisattvas, all of these should be perfected, and these paths should also do the work of the path, because the true limit should not be manifested. Asked: Blessed One, if the Bodhisattva Mahasattva thus perfects the Buddha's path, then he will also manifest the true limit. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, without purifying the Buddha-field, without maturing sentient beings, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not

It should not be manifested. (Question) World Honored One, what is the reason? Does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the path, realize the ultimate reality? The World Honored One said: No. (Question) World Honored One, then does he abide in the non-path? The World Honored One said: No. (Question) Then does he abide in the path and also in the non-path? The World Honored One said: No. (Question) Then does he abide neither in the path nor in the non-path? The World Honored One said: No. (Question) World Honored One, then how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva realize the ultimate reality? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, what do you think? By abiding in the path, have you been liberated from the outflows without attachment? (Answer) World Honored One, no. The World Honored One said: Then do you abide in the non-path? (Answer) World Honored One, no. The World Honored One said: Then do you abide in the path and also in the non-path? (Answer) World Honored One, no. The World Honored One said: Then, neither abiding in the path nor in the non-path, have you been liberated from the outflows without attachment? (Answer) World Honored One, no. World Honored One, my mind does not abide anywhere, and without attachment, I am not liberated from the outflows; my mind does not abide anywhere and is liberated. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, likewise, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, not abiding anywhere, realizes the ultimate reality. Subhuti, that which is called all-aspect knowledge, all-aspect knowledge, is called all-aspect knowledge by one aspect, that is, it is called all-aspect knowledge by the aspect of peace. Subhuti, in this way, by whatever aspect, whatever manner, whatever characteristic, the dharmas can be expressed, the Tathagata has understood those aspects, those manners, those characteristics; therefore, it is called all-aspect knowledge. (Question) World Honored One, all-knowingness
