The Hearers of the Thus-gone One do not become manifestly attached to names and signs. Subhuti, if they become manifestly attached to names, if they become manifestly attached to signs, then emptiness also becomes manifestly attached to emptiness. The signless also becomes manifestly attached to the signless. The wishless also becomes manifestly attached to the wishless. Suchness also becomes manifestly attached to suchness. The limit of reality also becomes manifestly attached to the limit of reality. The element of Dharma also becomes manifestly attached to the element of Dharma. The unconditioned also becomes manifestly attached to the unconditioned, because all these dharmas are merely names, and they do not abide in mere names. Subhuti, thus Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas abide in mere names and signs, and should practice the Perfection of Wisdom, and should not become manifestly attached to it. He asked: Blessed One, if all these conditioned things are merely names and signs, for what purpose do those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas generate the mind of enlightenment? Having generated the mind of enlightenment, they experience various actions, and practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva? Practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, they completely give various gifts, guard morality, accomplish patience, initiate diligence, enter into samadhi, cultivate wisdom, practice inner emptiness, practice outer emptiness, practice inner-outer emptiness, practice emptiness emptiness, practice great emptiness, practice ultimate emptiness, practice conditioned emptiness, practice unconditioned emptiness, practice emptiness beyond extremes, practice emptiness without beginning or end, practice emptiness without abandonment, practice emptiness of nature, practice emptiness of all dharmas, practice emptiness of self-character, and practice emptiness without object.
