The very nature of all-knowingness is not perceived. The suchness of all-knowingness is not perceived. If all-knowingness itself is not perceived, how can the suchness of all-knowingness be perceived? The Hundred Thousand Verses on the Perfection of Wisdom, Volume Five. When this chapter on the suchness of Sharadvatiputra, the suchness of non-error, and the suchness of non-otherness was taught, two hundred monks, without grasping, had their minds completely liberated from defilements. Five hundred nuns developed the Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding all phenomena. Five thousand bodhisattvas and gods obtained the tolerance of non-arising phenomena. Sixty bodhisattvas who were subject to falling away had their minds completely liberated from defilements without grasping. Sharadvatiputra, these great bodhisattvas revered five hundred Buddhas, and in all ways, they gave generously, maintained ethical conduct, cultivated patience, practiced diligence, accomplished meditative concentration, and cultivated wisdom. However, they were not fully embraced by the Perfection of Wisdom, nor were they fully embraced by skillful means. They gave generously, thinking, "This is generosity. Who should give generously? Who should not give generously?" "This is ethical conduct. I should maintain it." "This is patience. I should cultivate it." "This is diligence. I should exert it." "This is meditative concentration. I should enter into it." "This is wisdom. I should cultivate it." Thus, they engaged in various distinctions. They were separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not fully embraced by skillful means. They gave generously, maintained ethical conduct, cultivated patience, exerted diligence, entered into meditative concentration, and practiced wisdom. Because they acted with various perceptions, and because they did not perceive non-difference, they did not enter the faultless path of the bodhisattvas. Because they did not enter the faultless path of the bodhisattvas, they attained the fruit of stream-entry, they attained the fruit of once-returner, they attained the fruit of non-returner.

The fruit is obtained. The fruit of Arhat is obtained. Sharadvatiputra, the path of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, although they exist, if they are separated from the Prajnaparamita and not fully grasped by skillful means, then they will manifest the true limit and become Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Question: World Honored One, why is it that emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, even though they seem the same, those who are separated from the Prajnaparamita and separated from skillful means, manifest the true limit and become Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas? World Honored One, Bodhisattvas who are fully grasped by skillful means, even if they practice emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, rely on skillful means and will eventually manifest the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become Buddhas. The World Honored One said: Sharadvatiputra, some people are separated from the mind of all-knowingness, and only practice emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Because they have not obtained skillful means, they will become Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Sharadvatiputra, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who are not separated from the mind of all-knowingness, practice emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Because they have obtained skillful means, they will enter the Bodhisattva path without hindrance, and will eventually manifest the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, for example, there is a bird with a body of one hundred yojanas, or two hundred yojanas, or three hundred yojanas, or four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas. It wants to come here from the heaven of the Thirty-three, but that bird has no wings. It thinks: I will live in Jambudvipa, so it jumps from the heaven of the Thirty-three. Sharadvatiputra, what do you think about this? If that bird thinks on the way: I should live in the heaven of the Thirty-three.

Sharadvati's son, what do you think? Can that bird return to the realm of the thirty-three gods? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. The Bhagavan said: If it thinks on the way, 'By all means, I must stay in Jambudvipa without speaking or making noise,' Sharadvati's son, what do you think? Can that bird stay in Jambudvipa without speaking or making noise? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. Bhagavan, it will fall into Jambudvipa, and will speak or make noise, and will die or face death and suffer. Why is that? Bhagavan, it is impossible for such a large body without wings to do so. The Bhagavan said: Sharadvati's son, similarly, a Bodhisattva gives charity, keeps the precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, and meditates for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, and for the sake of attaining the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, his aspiration is great, his mind is great, and his retention is immeasurable, but if he is separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not supported by skillful means, he will fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Why is that? Because that Bodhisattva, without associating with the mind of All-Knowingness, gives charity, keeps the precepts, practices patience, exerts effort, and meditates. That Bodhisattva, being separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and not supported by skillful means, will fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Sharadvati's son, a Bodhisattva thinks, remembers, and makes marks on the discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the vision of the knowledge of liberation of the Tathagatas of the past, future, and present, but does not know the discipline of the Tathagatas, does not know concentration, does not know wisdom, does not know liberation, and does not know the vision of the knowledge of liberation, then...
