Oṃ. If completely held by the All-Knowing One, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not transform near the intermediate state. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva is like this, able to reach the state of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because they are inseparable from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means. Asked: Blessed One, how does a being of the Bodhisattva vehicle, inseparable from the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, not fall into the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is good, good that you think to ask the Tathagata this matter for the sake of beings of the Bodhisattva vehicle. Subhuti, here, if a being of the Bodhisattva vehicle first engages in giving, they give with a mind clinging to self and what belongs to self, and when they keep moral discipline, cultivate patience, exert effort, enter into meditative concentration, and cultivate wisdom, they also cultivate wisdom with a mind clinging to self and what belongs to self. When they engage in giving, they think like this: 'I am giving, I am giving to this, I am the giver.' 'I am keeping moral discipline, this is the moral discipline being kept, I am endowed with moral discipline.' 'I am cultivating patience, this is the patience being cultivated, I am endowed with patience.' 'I am exerting effort, this is what is being exerted, I am endowed with effort.' 'I am entering into meditative concentration, I am entering into meditative concentration on these, I am a meditator.' 'I am cultivating wisdom, this is the wisdom being cultivated, I am endowed with wisdom.' Thinking like this, they become arrogant with giving, they become arrogant with giving, they become arrogant thinking 'I am the giver.' They become arrogant with moral discipline, they become arrogant with the place of moral discipline, they become arrogant thinking 'I am endowed with moral discipline.' They

Patience gives rise to increased pride. Patience gives rise to arrogance. "I possess patience," thus giving rise to increased pride. Then diligence gives rise to increased pride. Diligence gives rise to arrogance. "I possess diligence," thus giving rise to increased pride. Then meditation gives rise to increased pride. Meditation gives rise to arrogance. "I am a meditator," thus giving rise to arrogance. Then wisdom gives rise to increased pride. Wisdom gives rise to arrogance. "I possess wisdom," thus giving rise to arrogance. Why is that? In the perfection of giving, there are no such discriminations; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of giving. In the perfection of ethics, there are no such fixed ideas; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of ethics. In the perfection of patience, there are no such discriminations; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of patience. In the perfection of diligence, there are no such fixed ideas; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of diligence. In the perfection of meditation, there are no such discriminations; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of meditation. In the perfection of wisdom, there are no such discriminations; having gone on for a long time is the perfection of wisdom. Even so, that person, a Bodhisattva vehicle practitioner, does not understand having gone on for a long time, nor does he understand the other shore. Therefore, he is not fully grasped by the perfection of giving, not fully grasped by the perfection of ethics, not fully grasped by the perfection of patience, not fully grasped by the perfection of diligence, not fully grasped by the perfection of meditation, not fully grasped by the perfection of wisdom, not fully grasped by the emptiness of the internal, not fully grasped by the emptiness of the external, not fully grasped by the emptiness of the internal and external, not fully grasped by the emptiness of emptiness, not fully grasped by the great emptiness, not fully grasped by the ultimate emptiness, not fully grasped by the emptiness of the conditioned, not fully grasped by the emptiness of the unconditioned, not fully grasped by the emptiness that transcends extremes.
