By this very nature of reality, may all those roots of virtue be completely dedicated. Having thus completely dedicated them, they become the most excellent of dedications. Just as it is understood, I too, by that very nature of reality, shall completely dedicate them to the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. Thus, it should be thoroughly examined. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Subhuti, saying: "Subhuti, well done, well done! Subhuti, in this way, you explain to the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, the aggregates of dedication, with the nature of no signs, with the nature of no objects, with the nature of no arising, with the nature of no cessation, with the nature of no defilement, with the nature of no purification, with the nature of no entity's own being, with the nature of the emptiness of self-characteristics, with the nature of the emptiness of own being, with the nature of the realm of Dharma, with the nature of suchness, and with the nature of the suchness that is not other. Subhuti, you are doing the work of explaining. Subhuti, if all the sentient beings in this three-thousand great thousand world system were to attain the path of the ten virtuous actions, attain the four concentrations, attain the four immeasurables, attain the four formless absorptions, and attain the five supernormal cognitions, Subhuti, what do you think? Would the merit of those sentient beings increase greatly because of that?" He replied: "Blessed One, it would increase greatly! Well-Gone One, it would increase greatly!" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, even more than that, if a son or daughter of good family were to dedicate with a dedication free from attachment, the merit of that dedication would increase exceedingly. Subhuti, in that case, the dedication of the roots of virtue of that son or daughter of good family is called excellent, called principal, called sacred, called superior, called supreme, called abundant, called unexcelled, called unequaled. Subhuti, furthermore, in this three-thousand great thousand world system, all the sentient beings that exist, all of them become stream-enterers."

Become. Become a once-returner. Become a non-returner. Become an Arhat. To this, if there is a son or daughter of good family who, for all those who have become stream-enterers, become once-returners, become non-returners, become Arhats, serves them with clothes, food, bedding, medicine, and many utensils for as long as they live, respects them, honors them, and makes offerings to them, what do you think, Subhuti? Would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly because of this? He replied: O Blessed One, it would be great. O Well-gone One, it would be great. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, even more than that, if there is a son or daughter of good family who dedicates all roots of virtue without attachment, the merit of that dedication will increase even more. Therefore, Subhuti, the dedication of the roots of virtue of that son or daughter of good family is called excellent. It is called principal. It is called sacred. It is called outstanding. It is called supreme. It is called abundant. It is called unsurpassed. It is called incomparable. Furthermore, Subhuti, in a three-thousand great thousand world system, if all the sentient beings there are become Pratyekabuddhas, and a son or daughter of good family serves them with clothes, food, bedding, medicine, and many utensils, respects them, honors them, and makes offerings to them without interruption, what do you think, Subhuti? Would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly because of this? He replied: O Blessed One, it would be great. O Well-gone One, it would be great. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, even more than that, if there is a son or daughter of good family who dedicates this root of virtue without attachment, the merit of that dedication will increase even more. Therefore, Subhuti, the dedication of the roots of virtue of that son or daughter of good family is called excellent. It is called principal. It is called sacred. It is called outstanding. It is called supreme. It is called abundant. It is called unsurpassed.
