Thus I think. Among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, how many are those who have attained the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, those who have attained the three doors of liberation, those who have attained the eight liberations, those who have attained the nine successive abiding meditative stabilizations, those who have attained the four individual correct knowledges, and those who have attained the six supernormal cognitions? Among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, how many are those who, having abandoned the three fetters, have become stream-enterers, those who, having attenuated desire, hatred, and delusion, have become once-returners, those who, having abandoned the five lower fetters, have become non-returners, those who, having abandoned the five higher fetters, have become Arhats, and those who have truly entered into self-enlightenment? Among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, how many are those who have no hesitation in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and those who have no hesitation in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha? Among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, how many are those who know mother, who know father, who know renunciates, who know Brahmins, who attend to the chief of their lineage, who give charity, who keep moral discipline, who are complete in fasting, who perceive desires as thorny, and who practice detachment, and similarly, who contemplate impermanence, who contemplate selflessness, who contemplate impurity, and who have no delight in all the world? How many among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa have truly entered into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Indra requested: O Blessed One, among the sentient beings of Jambudvipa, those who have attained the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, those who have attained the three doors of liberation, those who have attained the eight liberations, those who have attained the nine successive abiding meditative stabilizations, those who have attained the four individual correct knowledges, those who have attained the six supernormal cognitions, and those who, for the sake of abandoning the three fetters, have become stream-enterers, and for the sake of attenuating desire, hatred, and delusion,

Thereafter, becoming a once-returner, in order to abandon the five lower fetters, becoming a non-returner, in order to abandon the five higher fetters, becoming an Arhat, such an entry into self-enlightenment is extremely rare! World Honored One, among the beings of this Jambudvipa, such an entry into unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is even rarer! The World Honored One said: Kauśika, it is indeed so, it is indeed so, just as you have said. Kauśika, among the beings of this Jambudvipa, obtaining the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, obtaining the three doors of liberation, obtaining the eight liberations, obtaining the nine successive abidings in meditative absorption, obtaining the four analytical knowledges, obtaining the six supernormal knowledges, in order to abandon the three fetters, obtaining the stream-enterer fruit, in order to weaken desire, hatred, and delusion, becoming a once-returner, in order to abandon the five lower fetters, becoming a non-returner, in order to abandon the five higher fetters, becoming an Arhat, such an entry into self-enlightenment, such an entry into unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is rare, and among them, those who practice unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment are even fewer! Among them, those who desire to manifest unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment are extremely few! Kauśika, I am not obscured by the Buddha's eye here, in the world realms of the eastern direction as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, although countless beings practice unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, but because they do not possess the skillful means of the Perfection of Wisdom, only one or two of them will be able to abide in the irreversible stage, while most of them will abide in the stages of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Why is that? Kauśika, because the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment is
