Venerable One, thus, I have not seen, nor do I perceive, a Bodhisattva in all places, in all ways, in all aspects. If I do not see or perceive, how can I instruct and subsequently show any Bodhisattva the Perfection of Wisdom? If the Bodhisattva himself is not seen or perceived in entirety, how can I instruct and show any Bodhisattva the Perfection of Wisdom? Venerable One, the term 'Bodhisattva' is merely a name. Venerable One, just as the term 'I, I' is used, there is no manifest establishment of 'I.' Venerable One, similarly, the term 'Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva' also has no manifest establishment of a Bodhisattva. Thus, in these phenomena that lack inherent existence, what is there to see as manifestly established form? What is there to see as manifestly established feeling? What is there to see as manifestly established perception? What is there to see as manifestly established formation? What is there to see as manifestly established consciousness? Venerable One, that which is not manifestly established is not form. That which is not manifestly established is not feeling. That which is not manifestly established is not perception. That which is not manifestly established is not formation. That which is not manifestly established is not consciousness. Venerable One, since it is so, and even apart from that which is not manifestly established, if there is no Bodhisattva, a great being, who will engage in enlightenment, how can that which is not manifestly established instruct the Perfection of Wisdom, which is not manifestly established? If, when taught in this way, the mind of the Bodhisattva, the great being, does not shrink, does not utterly shrink, does not regret, and whose mind is not afraid, not terrified, not frightened, then that Bodhisattva, the great being, is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Then the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, why is it that a Bodhisattva, a great being, is not perceived at the prior limit, and not perceived at the posterior limit?

It is. There is nothing to focus on in the middle. Why, venerable Subhuti? Because form is all infinite. Bodhisattvas should know that all are infinite. Because feeling is all infinite. Bodhisattvas should know that all are infinite. Because perception is all infinite. Bodhisattvas should know that all are infinite. Because formation is all infinite. Bodhisattvas should know that all are infinite. Because consciousness is all infinite, bodhisattvas should know that all are infinite. Why, venerable Subhuti? The name of form bodhisattva, as such, is also non-existent and without focus. The name of feeling bodhisattva, as such, is also non-existent and without focus. The name of perception bodhisattva, as such, is also non-existent and without focus. The name of formation bodhisattva, as such, is also non-existent and without focus. The name of consciousness bodhisattva, as such, is also non-existent and without focus. Why, venerable Subhuti? Thus, if a bodhisattva mahasattva does not truly see or focus on everything, in every way, in all aspects, how can that bodhisattva instruct and show others the perfection of wisdom? Why, venerable Subhuti? If the very nature of a bodhisattva is not truly seen or focused upon,

What exists? What exists as the manifestation of feeling? What exists as the manifestation of perception? What exists as the manifestation of formation? What exists as the manifestation of consciousness? Whatever is not manifested, that is not form. Whatever is not manifested, that is not feeling. Whatever is not manifested, that is not perception. Whatever is not manifested, that is not formation. Whatever is not manifested, that is not consciousness. Thus he spoke. For what reason, venerable Subhuti, do you say that? Is it to instruct and subsequently teach the Perfection of Wisdom that is not manifested? Thus he spoke. For what reason, venerable Subhuti, do you say that? Apart from this unmanifested thing, there is no bodhisattva-mahasattva that can be designated. Thus he spoke. For what reason, venerable Subhuti, do you say that? If, when taught in this way, the mind of the bodhisattva-mahasattva does not become discouraged, does not become completely discouraged, does not regret, and the mind is not afraid, does not fear, does not become terrified, then that bodhisattva-mahasattva is practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus he spoke. Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said this to the venerable son of Sharadvati: Venerable son of Sharadvati, because there are no sentient beings, the bodhisattva does not focus on the prior limit. Because sentient beings are empty, sentient beings are secluded, and sentient beings are without inherent nature, the bodhisattva does not focus on the prior limit. Venerable son of Sharadvati, because there are no sentient beings, the bodhisattva does not focus on the posterior limit. Because sentient beings are empty, sentient beings are secluded, and sentient beings are without inherent nature, the bodhisattva does not focus on the posterior limit. Venerable son of Sharadvati, because there are no sentient beings, the bodhisattva does not focus on the middle. Because sentient beings are empty, sentient beings are secluded, and sentient beings are without inherent nature, the bodhisattva does not focus on the middle. Venerable son of Sharadvati, why is that? Mind
