Without joy. Having arisen from the samadhi of non-discrimination, joy and happiness, he dwells having closely attained the second dhyana. Having become detached from desire from joy, he dwells in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness. Experiencing happiness with the body, that state of the noble ones is said to be with mindfulness, practicing equanimity towards happiness. He dwells having closely attained the third dhyana, which is without joy. He also abandons happiness, also abandons suffering, and since pleasantness and unpleasantness of mind have already ceased, there is neither happiness nor suffering. He dwells having closely attained the fourth dhyana with equanimity and mindfulness. He cultivates a mind imbued with loving-kindness, vast, extremely expansive, non-dual, immeasurable, unobstructed, harmless, unannoyed, complete, and thoroughly cultivated, filling and pervading the ten directions bounded by the realm of the world, reaching to the limits of space, believing and practicing.

Therefore, practicing, that is to say, 'The sky is boundless,' he abides in the realm of boundless space. He completely transcends all realms of boundless space, that is to say, 'Consciousness is boundless,' he abides in the realm of boundless consciousness. He completely transcends all realms of boundless consciousness, that is to say, 'There is nothing at all,' he abides in the realm of nothingness. He completely transcends all realms of nothingness, and abides in the realm of neither perception nor non-perception in a way that is not focused. This is the meditation of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with the aspect and manner of space, and with characteristics, pacifies and arises from these meditations, these immeasurable and formless existences, he completely inclines towards omniscience, this is the discipline perfection of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. He practices the perfection of patience, separated from desire, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing investigation and analysis, joy and happiness born from separation, and abides in the first dhyana. After his investigation and analysis are pacified, his inner mind is completely clear, his mind becomes one-pointed, without investigation and analysis, joy and happiness born from samadhi, and he abides in the second dhyana. He is detached from desire from joy, possessing mindfulness and awareness, abiding in equanimity, experiencing happiness with his body, the noble ones declare: 'Possessing mindfulness, practicing equanimity towards happiness.' That is to say, he abides in the third dhyana without joy. He abandons happiness, and also abandons suffering, and since the pleasure and displeasure of the mind have already ceased, there is neither happiness nor suffering, with equanimity and mindfulness, he abides in the fourth dhyana. He, with a mind of loving-kindness,
