It is permissible to go sightseeing. Furthermore, there are five qualities of dwelling: gathering and not consuming, not consuming repeatedly, being able to leave without instructing for the next life, and being able to seek the Dharma robes as needed. From the end of autumn to the beginning of spring, the possessions of the monastic community of monks who have entered the summer retreat, which have not been distributed and set aside, will not be given to others if those who have established the dwelling do not trust them. This is called the business of dwelling. What is the business of the water strainer? A monk should not embark on a journey without a water strainer. If it is a continuously flowing stream of water, and it is suitable water that has not been mixed with other water, or a suitable well, or except for a continuously existing monastery at a distance of half a yojana, that is the business of the water strainer. What is the business of the walking place? The Blessed One has permitted two kinds of walking places: for meditation and for recitation. The walking place for meditation is eighteen cubits. The walking place for recitation is twelve cubits, and that is called the business of the walking place. What is the business of walking? If a monk wishes to walk, he should not walk too fast. He should walk slowly, with awareness, maintaining mindfulness, keeping the senses inward, not letting the mind wander outward, not making noise, not swaying back and forth, and walking straight. If he cannot walk straight, he should measure out a handful of thread, put the thread into a tube, hold onto it, and walk. This is called the business of walking. What is the business of spitting? Do not spit in front of the teacher, do not spit in front of a stupa, do not spit in front of the Khenpo and Acharya, do not spit in front of the Lama, do not spit in front of those who are to be made Lamas, do not spit in front of people in the village, and do not spit outwards. If one must spit outwards, one should go to a secluded place and spit, and one should not cause discomfort to others because of it. This is called the business of spitting. What is the business of scraping? If a monk wants to scrape, he should not scrape with a sharp instrument, he should not scrape with collected grass, but he should scrape with leaves or horns or other soft things. This is called the business of scraping. What is the business of defecation?
