What is it? It is impermanence. It is suffering. It is emptiness. It is selflessness. Think like this and stay. If you can, stay as long as you can. But if you can't, get up and recite three times. Speak of the merits of generosity, and after speaking of the merits of generosity, circumambulate to the right. Press foot against foot, abide with mindfulness of appearance present, be aware of getting up, abide with intention, hold in mind, enjoy the long and swift dawn of the end of the night, then sit in the lotus position, straighten the body and stay, bring mindfulness to mind, and abandon the eight things to be touched by this body, namely: disease. A tumor. Poison. Weapons. Impermanence. Suffering. Emptiness. Selflessness. Think like this. Then, when it dawns, take a tooth stick and chew it. Then do the things, and ask, 'Are you going to the monastic meal today? Or are you going for alms?' If you are going to the monastic meal, then act comfortably in the direction of virtue and beg for alms. If you are going for alms, then ask what kind of village, place of practice, believing family, and non-believing family there are, and whether or not the precepts have been given in this family. Ask, 'Is the bowl upside down?' Ask, 'Are there untamed horses and untamed cattle?' Then, in the morning, put on the lower garment, take the bowl and the Dharma garment, and knowingly go for alms. After going for alms and doing the food business, then after giving up taking alms and the food business, give up the Dharma garment and the bowl and stay comfortably, this is called the work that comes suddenly. What is the work of the suddenly arrived resident? The suddenly arrived monk resident should recognize the suddenly arrived monks. Also make them look good. Be without anger. With pleasant words, first make the monks happy. Bedding should be prepared for the suddenly arrived monks. While staying and staying, five kinds of guests should be invited, that is, in the temple, invite them, saying, 'This is the room, please look at it.'

Saying "This is the mattress, please look at the mattress," and "This is the key," instructing and entrusting, there are five items in total. This is called the duty of the abbot who arrives suddenly. The Vinaya Scripture, Volume Fifty-Two. What is the duty of going? The traveling monk should examine the area to which he is going. He should ask the monks who have come from that area whether any of the eight obstacles will occur. Will I not be busy going there, begging for alms, seeking medicine for illness, and being served? Even if I receive alms, medicine for illness, and service, if I am busy and gain nothing, will my body weaken and time pass? Will my body be comfortable and my mind happy if I go there? Will virtuous dharmas increase if I go there? Will I meet monks who uphold the precepts, have virtues, are diligent in virtuous dharmas, have the same views, and live in the same place if I go there? Will they prevent my unarisen doubts from arising? Will they eliminate arisen doubts again? Will they prevent my unarisen wrong views from arising? Will they reverse arisen wrong views again? Will my body be comfortable and my mind happy together with those who have life? Will virtuous dharmas increase together with those who have life? One should ask in this way, and thus one should examine the area. One should examine friends, do these who have life uphold the precepts? Do they have virtues? Are they diligent in virtuous dharmas? Do they have the same views? Do they live in the same place? If so, will they prevent my unarisen doubts from arising? Will they eliminate arisen doubts again? Regarding wrong views, will they also prevent unarisen wrong views from arising? Will my body and mind be happy together with those who have life? Together with those who have life, will virtuous dharmas increase? If these who have life do not abandon me when I am struck by illness on the road, one should examine friends in this way. One should examine the road, will any of the eight obstacles occur on that road?
