One should be placed in a lower position. They should also listen to and follow his instructions and teachings. This is called the conduct of an elder bhikkhu on the outskirts of a village. What is the conduct of one who arrives suddenly? A bhikkhu who arrives suddenly should not enter the monastery abruptly. The bowl and robe should be placed at the entrance of the monastery, and if there is water there, the feet should be washed. If there is no water, the dust should be wiped off with a duster or leaves, or old leaves. If there is a smell of excrement or urine, it should also be rinsed off. Then put on the robe, drape the measure of the robe over the left shoulder, and hold the container of the bowl. The right hand holds the mouthwash. The left hand holds the shoes. If the monastery is surrounded by walls, or by wooden fences, or by ditches, one should know and enter without dragging the door. One should circumambulate the stupas. One should know, keep mindfulness close, and not be distracted. One should be in harmony with dignified deportment, completely covered, lower one's voice, not look around, but only look at the length of the yoke, enter the temple, and not sit in a place that easily attracts attention. Be sure to let the resident bhikkhus see, thinking that this bhikkhu has arrived suddenly, and then they will let him rest. After a bhikkhu who has arrived suddenly enters the temple, he should place the measure of the robe, the container of the bowl, the pills, and the shoes in a suitable place. Then, with respect, reverence, and fear, pay homage to the feet of the elder bhikkhus. Make the new bhikkhus happy with pleasant words. One should sit on the seat that one has obtained. A bhikkhu who has arrived suddenly, whether it is at mealtime, drinking time, porridge time, or worship time, should listen to the instructions, strike the ghanta, and gather in the place where the sangha gathers. Ask the number of years of ordination and sit down in the order in which you are. If beds are distributed, one should receive them very carefully. If lodging is assigned, one should ask whether one will stay here. If one stays, one should say, "Please do as you please."

If one is a non-resident, then he should put the alms bowl and Dharma robes aside and look for a broom to sweep. Also look for a water pot and a wooden mat. When arriving at the door of the dwelling, knock gently. However, if there is a snake, or a scorpion, or a centipede, or a Trimapuka, or a Trelataka, or any other venomous creature there, be aware of their presence. Check the bottom of the door up and down. Also check the door leaf. Then gently open the door, enter consciously, sit in the center, and observe the four sides for snake nests, scorpion nests, worms, bees, or other ant nests. If they exist, move them aside in a way that does not harm them. Then, find cracks in the dwelling. Sweep. Move the broom. Sweep gently and smoothly with something heavy. If there is a mattress, chair, wooden stool, low stool, cushion with inner padding, or square object there, come out, and if an elder has been sitting there before, wait a moment. If not, gently shake the door ring, enter consciously, and wash your feet. A bhikkhu who arrives suddenly should ask the bhikkhus residing there if there has been any act of intimidation, or any act of slander, or any act of expulsion, or any act of reconciliation, or any act of abandonment due to not seeing, or any act of abandonment due to not doing the work again, or any act of abandonment due to not abandoning sinful views, or inflicting punishment, or inflicting punishment by raising from the base, or making satisfied, or making satisfied by raising from the base, and so on. Ask if there are such things. If they exist, abandon them in that way. Know about coming out of and entering the temple, as well as the surroundings, the outer area, the toilet, the stairs, the steps, the closing and opening of the door, and so on. Ask. Ask what the affairs of the Sangha are like. Entering the dwelling, sit cross-legged on the mat, straighten the body, maintain mindfulness, and avoid the eight tangible things. These are: disease, tumors, weapons, poison.
