In order to allow contact with the ground and to enjoy comfort, and in order to fully enjoy the offerings and the wealth given by the donors. A monk should not drink soup while making noise. Knowingly, one should suppress the sound and drink the soup. Not for arrogance, not for pride, not for conceit, not for goodness, but to heal the wounds of the body and to sustain life. This is called the business of soup. What is the business of water? A monk should examine the water very carefully. Clear, bright, not turbid, not mixed, cool, one should fully enjoy clean water. This is called the business of water. What is the business of a water pot? The Blessed One allowed the monks to use water pots, whether for the Sangha or for individuals, with a base and a lid to cover the water. The monks should wash them very carefully, dry them, keep them clean, and carry them. Water should be placed with a suitable hand and a suitable cloth, and distributed. Even if Brahmins and householders come, water should be poured for them. The monks should hide the water pots very carefully, be diligent, so that they do not have to be searched for everywhere. This is called the business of a water pot. What is the business of a fully used water pot? The Blessed One allowed the monks to use fully used water pots. They should be washed very carefully, dried, kept clean, and carried. After filling them, they should be placed at the door of the temple. The monks should keep the fully used pots in a secluded place, be diligent, so that they do not have to be searched for everywhere. This is called the business of a fully used water pot. What is the business of a clean pellet? The Blessed One allowed the monks to use pellets. They should not be placed near stupas. The monk should check them from time to time, dry them, and fill them. This is called the business of a clean pellet. What is the business of food? Five kinds of cooked food and five kinds of food. Whether it is cooked food or food, the monks should maintain mindfulness when eating, examine the food, look for food, prepare the food carefully, and similarly, fully enjoy it.

It is digestion. It is decay. It is dissipation, one should understand it thus and then eat. Maintaining mindfulness and without distraction, one should understand food as sustenance. When eating together, eating repeatedly, and being satisfied, one should also maintain mindfulness. This is called the activity of food. What is the activity of eating? When a monk eats tsampa, or eats porridge, or drinks soup, whenever it is announced, or immediately after the gavel is struck, one should come quickly. Gather quickly. Stand knowingly. Sit knowingly. Eat knowingly. One should maintain mindfulness and not be distracted, dress neatly, behave properly, be very cautious, and be very quiet. Lowering the voice, not looking around, but looking about the distance of a yoke of oxen. Accompanied by order. Accompanied by humility. Thinking of fear and being controlled by others, with the mind like sweeping dust. For the elders, the middle ones, and the new monks, have a loving heart. Have a loving heart. Manifest the recognition of father, son, and brothers, and skillfully sit on the seat. Skillfully eat. This is called the activity of eating. What is the activity of giving food? A monk, having taken food, should not return it. One should not give it away casually. To whom should food be given? It should be given to the mother. Father, brothers, and sisters. It should also be given to relatives. It should also be given to laypeople who come to the monastery. It should be given to those who have been kind. It should also be given to those who have not been kind. It should also be given to the sick, the imprisoned, and the busy. If a pregnant woman comes, one should also maintain mindfulness and give. One should also give a mouthful of food to animals. It should also be given to those who wish to renounce. It should also be divided into small pieces, leaving leftovers to give.
