Until it is exhausted. If a monastery is built that includes a stupa, and bedding is also provided, then there will be no rotation of duties for the duration of their lives. As for the one who is fully capable of new duties, if a monk who does not possess five qualities is appointed to a new duty, then do not appoint him; if he is appointed, then remove him. What are the five? Not diligent, lazy, not attentive, not quick, and not knowing whether the new duty has been done or not. If a monk who possesses five qualities is appointed to perform a new duty, then appoint him; if he is appointed, then do not remove him. What are the five? Diligent, not lazy, attentive, quick, and knowing whether the new duty has been done or not. The monk who performs the new duty should also sweep the temple from time to time. The one who works in the temple should always be made happy, and just as all new duties are performed for the temple, he should be made happy in such a way that it does not deteriorate. If it is done in this way, it is good; if it is not done in this way, it will become a ruin. Such is called being fully capable of performing new duties. What is the full competence of prostration? The Blessed One has granted two types of prostration to the monks: prostration to the monks and prostration to the teacher. How should a monk treat an elder monk? He should speak pleasant words to his face, prostrate, stand up in his presence, fold his palms, prostrate, bow his head to his feet, grasp both feet with both hands and squeeze them. As for the Tathagata, one should prostrate with the five circles (of the body touching the ground). This is called the full competence of prostration. What is the full competence of sour gruel? Sour gruel is for sick monks and those with wind disorders, just as it was given to the venerable Shariputra. What substances should be used to make sour gruel? Roots, stems, leaves, flowers, medicines, and seeds, all of these should be soaked together until they become sour, then clarified, not turbid, filtered with a cloth, diluted with water, made moderate, and drunk between day and night. This is the sour gruel.

This is the ultimate perfection. What is the ultimate perfection of powder? The Blessed One fully permitted two kinds of powder to the monks: medicinal powder and washing powder. Medicinal powders were permitted to eliminate diseases. The washing powder was permitted to the monks not for the sake of fatness, not for the sake of pride, not for the sake of beauty, not for the sake of adornment, but for the sake of removing dirt from the body. What should be used to make washing powder? It should be made from lentils, black lentils, mustard seeds, beans, their outer shells, and grain flour. For the monks, powder contaminated with various odors should not be used for adornment, but should be used entirely as washing powder. If one finds powder contaminated with odors without deliberately seeking it, there is no fault. Similarly, if one contaminates and uses it oneself with medicines that are compatible with it, it is the same. This is called the ultimate perfection of powder. What is the ultimate perfection of medicine? The Blessed One permitted medicine to sick monks to eliminate diseases, that is, in the morning, noon, evening, and at any time, herbal medicine, trunk medicine, leaf medicine, flower medicine, and fruit medicine can be used. A monk who is not sick should not arbitrarily use the medicine for the sick. This is called the ultimate perfection of medicine. What is the ultimate perfection of drink? The Blessed One permitted eight kinds of drinks to the monks from what is called the righteous sugarcane. What are those eight? Namely: mango, mocha, jambu, palmyra fruit, parusha fruit, banyan fruit, udumbara fruit, and grapes.
