What is cooked by a fully ordained monk? Whatever is cooked by a fully ordained monk is called 'cooked by a monk.' What is taken? Whatever is knowingly taken by a monk who is ashamed is called 'taken.' What is taken without being given? Whatever is a woman, a man, a hermaphrodite, a eunuch, or someone with two sets of genitals, if it is taken without being given, it is called 'taken without being given.' What is taking back what was taken? Whatever I take back and later give and take from someone else is called 'taking back what was taken.' What is giving and taking in the morning? Whatever is given and taken without eating, the Blessed One personally permitted it in the city of Vaishali. In such a time of famine, when scarcity is difficult to find, if a monk has already approved, even if there is nothing left after giving and taking in the morning, he may eat it. This is called 'giving and taking in the morning.' Then, what is taking again? Whatever monk eats there and then takes food and leaves. This was also personally permitted by the Blessed One in the city of Vaishali. In such a time of famine, when scarcity is difficult to find, a monk may take again, and even if there is nothing left, he may eat it. This is called 'taking again.' What are forest fruits? The so-called forest fruits are, for example, Starga, Orumana, Badamala, etc., and any other edible fruits of the forest. These were also permitted by the Blessed One in the city of Vaishali. In such a time of famine, when scarcity is difficult to find, if a monk has already approved, even if the forest fruit is not left over, he may eat it. This is called 'forest fruits.' What is a pond? The venerable Shariputra was afflicted with red bile disease, and the doctor permitted him to eat lotus roots as a remedy. Then, the venerable Great Maudgalyayana took lotus roots from a pond with lotuses and gave them to the venerable Shariputra. He ate a little, but mostly did not want to eat, so he gave them to the monks. The monks also said that we approve.

When Sazin said, "Do not eat," the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: "Like this, in times of famine and scarcity when things are difficult to obtain, even if the monks have permitted it, do not eat like the remnants of a pond. What is that? For example, Rishi Ghatika, Kharka Ghatika, Karshinga Kakata, and so on, and other fruits that grow in water, which are called growing from ponds." Then, the Blessed One, in times of famine and scarcity when things were difficult to obtain, stayed in Vaishali as long as he pleased, and then traveled to where the Sangha was. After traveling in stages, he arrived at Sravasti and stayed in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Sravasti. There, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, in the great city of Vaishali, in times of famine and scarcity when things were difficult to obtain, I allowed the monks eight things, namely: what is placed inside, what is cooked inside, what is cooked by oneself, what is cooked by a monk, what is received in the morning, what is then taken back, forest arrowheads, and pond foods. Are those things still allowed to be eaten as they were there?" Some monks said yes, some monks said no. Then, because of that topic, the Blessed One gathered the monastic community of monks and instructed the monks: "Monks, in the city of Vaishali, in times of famine and scarcity when things were difficult to obtain, for the sake of compassion, the monks allowed these eight things, but the condition for allowing them is that they can be eaten in times of famine, but should not be eaten in times of plenty. Whoever eats them commits a transgression. What is sewing? With nine aspirations, sewing can be completed. What is that? A monk who sews a robe, from the beginning, when accepting, washing, dyeing, sewing, cutting, and stitching the robe, should generate three thoughts: 'I, the monk, named so-and-so, sew this robe to offer to the Sangha.'
