Because it is said that one does not desire afflictions, it is bestowed saying that this venerable one is good. Because it is said that this venerable one should be expelled, therefore, to satisfy the mind in this way is the merit of expulsion. For what reason is expulsion done? It is done for the sake of purification. If one is expelled, then that monk will become pure and without transgression. How is it said that these two are pure and without affliction? For whom transgression does not arise, and for whom, even if it arises, it is restored according to the Dharma, expulsion is also pure for him. Therefore, expulsion is also for the sake of purification. To seek its essence, what is giving? Which monk conceals a fault, confesses from concealment, and then conceals again from confession, for that one who conceals again, in order to seek the essence, one should be without regret and without dwelling with supplication and four karmas. This is called punishing with punishment in order to seek the essence. What is a fault? The five kinds of faults are called the heap of faults, namely, parajika, sanghavasesa, patayantika, pratidesaniya, and duskrita. Whoever practices and does these without repenting, that is a fault. What is without fault? Those five kinds of faults, because they are without fault, are called the heap of faultlessness, namely, parajika, sanghavasesa, patayantika, residing separately, and duskrita, etc., do not do deeds either, because they have not been practiced and have not been done, so this admonition is called faultlessness. What is a heavy fault? It is that which cannot be expelled. What is a light fault? It is that which can be expelled. What is a fault with remainder? It is the lower kinds of faults, namely, sanghavasesa, patayantika, pratidesaniya, and duskrita. What is a fault without remainder? It is the first kind of fault, the four patajantikas. What is a gross fault? It is parajika and sanghavasesa. Why is it called a gross fault? Because of two reasons it is called a gross fault, namely, because the fault is gross it is called a gross fault, and because the nature is a gross fault it is called a gross

That which is coarse, that is called a coarse offense. What is an offense that is not a coarse offense? It is the remaining three categories of offenses: defeat, repeated offense, and misdeed. This is called an offense that is not a coarse offense. What is an offense with action? It is that which should be confessed and that which should be restrained. What is an offense in which action should not be taken? It is the first of all offenses. Vinaya Main Text, Volume Forty-eight. What is an offense that should be repeated? It is when a monk, in the four or five dharmas, keeps mindfulness close within and, with faith, repeats the offense according to the Dharma, that is an offense that should be repeated. What is an offense that should not be repeated? It is when a monk has neither the four dharmas nor the five dharmas, and does not keep mindfulness close within, and does not repeat the offense according to the Dharma with faith, that is called an offense that should not be repeated. What is an offense that is aroused? In one aspect, all offenses are included, and that is the discipline. In one aspect, all offenses are not included, and that is the absence of discipline. That is called an offense that is aroused. What is speech? It is like this, if a monk says, "Venerable one, you have committed such and such an offense, confess it again! Come! Come! Do it again according to the Dharma," that is speech. What is causing to remember? It is like this, if a monk says to another monk, "Venerable one, do you not remember committing such and such an offense?" that is causing to remember. What is an action with words? It is an action with words. What is that? It is like this, if a monk says to a monk with words, "Venerable one, you have a wound, do not go from here to where I have not smeared it. Venerable one, you have a dispute with me," that is called an action with words. What is a pleasing action? There are five kinds of pleasing actions. In the case of distinguishing a person, one says, "You said such a thing about that object," that is making it pleasing. "You said that object in such a place," that is making it pleasing. "Your object
