If one cuts off sustenance, one will also commit a root downfall and also commit an action with no interval. If one cuts off sustenance with an unwholesome mind, one will not commit a root downfall and there are also cases where one does not commit an action with no interval. Venerable one, if a monk cuts off sustenance with a mind that does not give food, will he commit a root downfall and commit an action with no interval? If one cuts off sustenance with a mind that does not give food, will one not commit a root downfall and not commit an action with no interval? The Blessed One said: Upali, if a monk cuts off sustenance with a mind that does not give food, he will also commit a root downfall and also commit an action with no interval. Venerable one, how does a monk, with a virtuous mind, cut off sustenance and also commit a root downfall and also commit an action with no interval? How does a monk, with a virtuous mind, cut off sustenance and not commit a root downfall and not commit an action with no interval? He said: Upali, for example, if a monk cuts off sustenance to a sick person who has been ill for a long time, is weak, severely afflicted by suffering, and experiences great harm, because of such a reason, he will also commit a root downfall and also commit an action with no interval. For example, if that monk gives rice, porridge, broth, meat, and deer meat to someone who is not sick, if he dies because of that reason, then he will not commit a root downfall and will not commit an action with no interval. Therefore, if a monk cuts off sustenance with a virtuous mind, he will also commit a root downfall and also commit an action with no interval.

What does not become a root downfall offense? It is said: Upāli, like this, if a monk, for the sake of wealth or for the sake of walking, severs the life of his mother, it will become a root downfall offense and also become an irreversible offense. Likewise, if a monk, with an unwholesome mind, thinks of hitting a yak, or a sheep, or a goat, but hits his mother instead, and because of that, she dies at that time, it will not become a root downfall offense for him, nor will it become an irreversible offense. If, with an unwholesome mind, he severs the life of his mother, it will become a root downfall offense and also become an irreversible offense. If, with an unwholesome mind, he severs the life of his mother, it will not become a root downfall offense, nor will it become an irreversible offense. How does severing the life of one's mother with an undeclared mind become a root downfall offense and also become an irreversible offense? What is it that severing the life of one's mother with an undeclared mind does not become a root downfall offense, nor does it become an irreversible offense? The Blessed One said: Like this, some monks set a trap so as not to kill their mother, and she lies down. Underneath her lying down, the life of the mother is severed, it will become a root downfall offense and also become an irreversible offense. Like this, a monk, with an undeclared mind, strikes the ground, thinking of striking a leaf of a tree, but hits his mother instead, and because of that, she dies at that time, it will not become a root downfall offense, nor will it become an irreversible offense. If, therefore, a monk kills his mother with an undeclared mind, it will become a root downfall offense and also become an irreversible offense. If he kills his mother with an undeclared mind, it will not become a root downfall offense, nor will it become an irreversible offense. Similarly, the father and the Arhat of the Hearers are also the same. The Holy Vinaya Text, Volume Forty-Five. If monks and nuns reside together within the boundary, and have not renounced from the beginning, and the Sangha has not assembled, then if all actions are performed with mere words, is it considered done and without fault? The Blessed One said: It is so. The Tathagata, the Arhat, is perfectly complete.
