That is the Sangha being divided and abiding separately. What is it that the Sangha is not divided, yet the Sangha abides separately? That is other than these instances. Are all those divisions of the Sangha present in a kalpa? Is everything that is present in a kalpa a division of the Sangha? When asked thus, there are also those who have caused a division of the Sangha but do not abide in a kalpa. There are those who abide in a kalpa, and have also caused a division of the Sangha, and also abide in a kalpa. There are those who neither cause a division of the Sangha nor abide in a kalpa. What is it that has caused a division of the Sangha but does not abide in a kalpa? Whoever, with a mind of righteousness, has caused the Sangha to be divided, that is the one who has caused a division of the Sangha but does not abide in a kalpa. What is it that abides in a kalpa but has not divided the Sangha? The Naga king Powerful, the Naga king Very Abiding, the Naga king Delightful, the Naga king Joyful, Near Joyful, Possessing Hair, Horse Virtuous, the Lord of Death, and the gods of the Brahma retinue. These abide in a kalpa, and have not caused a division of the Sangha. What is it that both divides the Sangha and abides in a kalpa? Devadatta, this is the one who both divides the Sangha and abides in a kalpa. What is it that neither divides the Sangha nor abides in a kalpa? That is other than these instances. Does everyone who has slightly caused a division of the Sangha become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa? Does everyone who becomes a transgression of abiding in a kalpa cause a division of the Sangha? There are those who have caused a division of the Sangha but do not become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa. There are those who become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa but have not caused a division of the Sangha. There are those who both divide the Sangha and become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa. There are those who neither divide the Sangha nor become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa. What is it that divides the Sangha but does not become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa? Whoever, with a mind of righteousness, has caused the Sangha to be divided, this is the one who has divided the Sangha but does not become a transgression of abiding in a kalpa. What is it that becomes a transgression of abiding in a kalpa but has not divided the Sangha?
