There are also those who are not close to the earth. There are also those who are close to the earth but do not abide. There are also those who are neither close to the earth nor abide. What is it to be close to the earth but not to abide? If someone has become close to the five things, and none of the four kinds of faults have occurred, then that is being close to the earth, and not not abiding. What is it to not abide but not be close to the earth? If someone has committed any of the four faults, but has not committed to the five things, then that is not abiding, and not being close to the earth. What is it to be close to the earth but not abide? Having committed to the five things, and any of the four faults have occurred, then that is being close to the earth and also not abiding. What is it to be neither close to the earth nor not abide? It is other than those situations. Are all those who do not abide, abiding separately? Are all those who abide separately, not abiding? It is said: There are those who do not abide but are not abiding separately. There are those who abide separately but are not not abiding. There are those who both do not abide and abide separately. There are also those who neither do not abide nor abide separately. What is it to not abide but not abide separately? For example, any of the four faults have occurred, but because the Sangha has not seen it, it has not been abandoned, and one does not do it again, and one has not given up looking at sin, so it has not been abandoned, that is not abiding, and it is not abiding separately. What is it to abide separately but not not abide?

Apart from the earth, belonging to them is neither non-abiding nor individually abiding. Is that which is abandoned also called 'removal'? It is said, 'That which is abandoned, that 'removal' is the same.' What is karma? What is a thing? It is the karma that produces faults. That which is unconfessed is a thing. What is 'fixing'? What is 'fixing laying'? What is 'fixing extracting'? It is said, 'Upali, the name of that cloth is called 'fixing'. Generating the mind there is 'fixing laying'. Thinking in eight ways is 'fixing extracting'. If a bhikshuni commits an offense and becomes a bhikshu, will it be purified? If a bhikshu commits an offense during his lifetime and becomes a bhikshuni, will it be purified? The Blessed One said, 'Yes, it will. How is it that if a bhikshuni commits an offense when she is not a bhikshuni and becomes a bhikshu, she will be purified?' It is because when a bhikshuni is alive, she commits a remaining offense of the non-common sangha, so she changes her gender, and after changing her gender, she enters the ranks of bhikshus, then the offense is called purified. How is it that if a bhikshu commits an offense during his lifetime and becomes a bhikshuni, it is called purified? It is because when a bhikshu is alive, he commits a different remaining offense of the sangha, so he changes his gender, and after changing his gender, he becomes a bhikshuni, then that offense is called purified. If an offense is committed unknowingly, will it be purified knowingly? If an offense is committed knowingly, will it be purified unknowingly? The Blessed One said, 'Yes, it will. How is it that an offense is committed unknowingly and purified knowingly?' It is because a bhikshu is lifted up from sleep and placed on a large, high mattress. Or because he is put to sleep in a woman's bed. One who has not taken full ordination is expelled to sleep, and then the one who has not taken full ordination comes back and sits down, and after waking up, how does he do that offense again according to the Dharma? That is, the offense is committed unknowingly and becomes purified knowingly. What is it that an offense is committed knowingly and purified unknowingly? It is because a bhikshu commits a remaining offense of the sangha, and to remove it, the words of karma are spoken.
