While residing in Shravasti, another householder built a monastery complete with all necessities and offered it to a large number of monks. He and sixty of his retinue entered the summer retreat there. After emerging from the retreat, they acted together, and the nearby residents, as well as those residing in whatever direction, came to pay homage to his feet. After they paid homage to his feet, they departed, and then said, "Venerable one, I, this householder named so-and-so, invite you, please stay here." They replied, "Khenpo, yes." He said, "Then, please stay and eat some tsampa today." They replied, "We have come with food and utensils, we will find it ourselves." He said, "Then, very well, do so." Then they left with food and utensils. Similarly, some brought lamp oil, some brought foot ointment, some brought shoes, some brought clothes, some brought umbrellas, some brought wood, some brought medicines of roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Before long, that monastery was filled with utensils, and that monk went to where the householder was, and upon arriving, he said, "Householder, your utensils are all used up." The householder replied, "Venerable one, there are few monks here and many utensils offered, why are they used up so quickly?" After they spoke in detail, he said, "Venerable ones, I offered for those who reside here, if they reside elsewhere, why use them elsewhere?" Thus he pointed out their faults. The monks told the Blessed One what had happened, and the Blessed One instructed, "Monks, it is wrong to slander that householder. Therefore, monks, do not reside elsewhere, nor use what belongs to others. Monks, if you reside elsewhere and use what belongs to others, repay the value of whatever you have used." This is the fourth verse of the Sutra of the Single Foot, Four Doors. In summary: signs and also obvious signs, Patang and patterned ones, short-legged tables and patterned feet, sword-tooth work and summer house, Buddha.

At that time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. In Shravasti, two brothers became monks. One of them stayed in the Sharada's residence, and the other in Jeta's Grove. After some time, the Sharada's monk went to the village of Ribhraka for some business. That monk, in order to see his brother, divided the robes and went to him. He placed the individual's robe among the Sangha's robes and sat down chatting. Later, he mistakenly wore a Sangha robe and left. After that, the Sharada's monk returned and saw a small robe there. He said, 'Venerable one, has the Sangha's gain been completed?' He said, 'The Sangha has not gained anything. Whose robe is this? These are the Sangha's.' He said, 'We are big, this is small. Has anyone come here wearing a robe? My brother came here.' Go and ask him. He went and asked, and he looked and it was the Sangha's. He said, 'I made a mistake, I took the Sangha's, mine should be there.' He took that and came back. That's how it happened, and the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'The Sangha's should be marked.' The monks did not know how to mark it, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Write "This was offered by so-and-so monk."' The monks wrote both the Sangha's and the individual's in that way. That's how it happened, and the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'The individual's should have a clear mark.' The origin of the story is in Shravasti. The Blessed One instructed, 'Whether it is the Sangha's or the individual's, do not use patterned ones between beds without cushions.' The monks began to make individual Patangstans. Some of them said, 'The Blessed One allows obtaining from patterned items, but not making them oneself.' Another said, 'Abandon the things that are made.' That's how it happened, the monks...
