Having seen something on the food, he said, 'Those living beings saw the flies on the feces come here and contaminate the food, making it unclean.' Hearing this, many monks did not eat. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Monks, flies fly everywhere, take whatever they touch, do not doubt it.' Monks, the painters, being confused, thinking they were paint buckets, lifted up and carried away the Sangha's ghee buckets and butter buckets. When they recognized them, they stood and threw them away, and the buckets broke.' The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'If the ladder is climbed too high, just climb a little bit, then put it down and place it in a comfortable place, do not let it fall.' That is to say, if the ladder is climbed too low and needs to be climbed higher, move it upwards and place it in a comfortable place, do not let it fall. The monks did not eat because they had doubts. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, 'Do not doubt, eat.' The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, 'How many things are permissible for monks to abandon?' Upali, there are two: those who are shameless and do not delight in learning, and those who, although they have shame, are forgetful. These two can be abandoned, others can be eaten. The Blessed One said, 'If you give alms to sentient beings in the animal realm, you can expect a hundredfold result. If you give alms to a person who is immoral, you can expect a thousandfold result. If you give alms to a virtuous person who observes morality, you can expect a millionfold result. If you give alms to non-Buddhist hermits who are free from desire, you can expect a hundred millionfold result. For those who are entering to realize the fruit of stream-entry, it is immeasurable. The land is also immeasurable. Those who have entered into realizing the fruit of once-returner are even more immeasurable. Those who have entered the stream of once-returner are even more immeasurable. Those who have entered into realizing the fruit of non-returner are even more immeasurable. Those who have entered the stream of non-returner are even more immeasurable. Those who have entered into realizing the fruit of Arhat are even more immeasurable. Arhats are even more immeasurable, so what need is there to say about Pratyekabuddhas and Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas? When Brahmins and householder devotees go to stupas to pay homage, they offer umbrellas, banners, and flags, and when monks encounter such situations, they are unable to offer them anywhere. Some of them said: Venerable ones, the Blessed One has taught that one should not dedicate or give offerings to others. Others again said: What else can be done about this? Let us report to the Blessed One. That is how it happened, and the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One taught: Monks, there are four things that must be given: enlightenment, the wheel of Dharma, great miracles, and descent from the heavenly realm. Having dedicated these, do not dedicate them to others. Apart from that, if there is a reason to dedicate to others, it is permissible to dedicate to others, do not doubt it. Monks, I have allowed it to be used when in need, and similarly, do not use it when not in need. If you use it that way, it will become using it together with the past. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, if two monks quarrel, argue, or fight, what should be taken as the standard? The Blessed One taught: The one who is virtuous. If both are virtuous, then the one who is more learned. If both are more learned, then the one who is content. If both are content, then the one who is more content. If both are more content, then Upali, it is impossible for there to be one more content than two who are both more content. It is impossible. There is no such possibility, people like those two would not quarrel or argue.
