The great one illuminated the entire Jeta Grove, scattered flowers to the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. The Blessed One, knowing his thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature, taught the Dharma that would enable him to truly realize the four noble truths. Then, the son of the gods, the former venomous serpent, upon hearing this, shattered the twenty peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, and manifested the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he spoke three joyful words: 'Such benefit bestowed by the venerable one, even my mother did not do, nor did my father, nor did the king, nor did the gods, nor did the suffering ones, nor did my many relatives, nor did my ancestors, nor did the ascetics and Brahmins. But the Blessed One has dried up my ocean of blood and tears, crossed the mountain of bones, closed the gate of the lower realms, opened the gate of heaven and liberation, and placed me in the realm of gods and humans. By your power, you have cut off the paths of the most unbearable lower realms, full of many faults. For the path to go to heaven, you have given the supreme merit. Today I have obtained the path to nirvana. Relying on you, I now have eyes that are pure and immaculate, free from faults. I have obtained the peaceful abode beloved by the noble ones, I have crossed the ocean of suffering. Beings, gods and non-gods, and humans worship you, you are completely free from birth, old age, sickness, and death. Even in a thousand eons it is very difficult to see you, O Muni, today you have made me fruitful by seeing you.' Then, Semodo, hanging down, prostrated to the two feet and felt joy. Having conquered the enemy, he circumambulated him to the right and went to the abode of the gods, the land of the gods. Then, the son of the gods, the former venomous serpent, like a merchant who has gained profit, like a harvest that is abundant, like a hero who has conquered in battle, like a sick person who has been freed from all diseases, with such enjoyment, and with such enjoyment as coming to the presence of the Blessed One, returned to his own abode. The monks, not sleeping at dusk and dawn, diligently practicing, saw the vast light appearing before the Blessed One, and upon seeing it

Becoming doubtful, they asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, was the Blessed One with the Lord of the Brahma host last night? Or did the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and the Four Great Kings come to see you?" "Monks, it was not the Lord of the Brahma host, nor was it the Lord of the Gods, Indra, nor did the Four Great Kings and others come to see me. But the monk who endured the venomous snake, having manifest faith in me, passed away and was reborn in the excellent abode of the gods of the Thirty-Three. Then he came to me last night, and I taught him the Dharma, and having seen the truth, he returned to his abode. Therefore, monks, you should train yourselves in this way: 'Whatever is to be endured, and whatever virtues of endurance are to be spoken of, monks, you should train yourselves in this way.'" When the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks were delighted and rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said. The origin of the story is that while in Shravasti, the Venerable Upali asked the Blessed One, "If monks are to be ordained, and the Venerable Ones say, 'Do not ordain me,' but the monks still ordain them, is it considered ordained or not ordained?" "Upali, it should not be said to be ordained, for those who ordain them will also be transgressing. Upali, why is that? Even one who has been ordained, if they renounce the precepts, is called unordained, what more when they are being ordained?" Again, the Venerable Upali asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, you said that novice monks should be ordained after they are twenty years old. But some novice monks do not know their age, and their bodies are large. If the monks do not know their age and are doubtful, and do not ordain them, how should they be dealt with?" The Blessed One replied, "Upali, in such cases, you should discern them by their appearance and then ordain them. Do not be doubtful."
