Explanation of the First Aspect of Singleness Explanation of the First Aspect of Singleness In the essence of the aspect of singleness: Prostration is the first action; Secondly, the containers are indefinite; Thirdly, there are also the implements; That is called singleness. In brief: Prostration and the sound of 'gsing ma'; Likewise, sitting, lying down, and dogs; Likewise, drinking cups and sugarcane; Likewise, butter, roots, and tree trunks; It is said that these are the summaries of the topics. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Nyang (Shravasti), in Jeta's Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, two monks were speaking words that were not conducive to separation, and one spoke harsh words to the other, and the younger one greatly reviled the elder. He entered his dwelling and sat down, and the younger one thought, 'I have greatly reviled the elder, I will go and ask for forgiveness.' He went to his dwelling, touched his two feet, and said, 'Venerable one, please forgive me for greatly reviling you,' and he asked for forgiveness. And he said, greatly angered, 'He has harmed me and caused me pain.' When the monks heard this, they ran and asked, 'Venerable one, why are you crying out?' He said, 'Look, this venerable one has come to my dwelling and is causing me harm.' They said to him, 'Venerable one, why are you harming this elder monk?' And he told them what had happened, and they remained silent. He thought, 'Therefore, the Bhagavan has said to prostrate, so that my disciples will accomplish their own benefit with a mind of love, a mind of benefit, and a mind of affection.' If he is displeased and angered by seeing me, I will endure it and go as I can.' Thinking this, he went away, and later, if he did not even prostrate to him, what need is there to mention enduring it? Then, at a later time, the elder monk was walking, talking, and sitting with another monk, and that monk came to that place from prostrating to the monks. The monk who was his walking companion said to him, 'Venerable one, such a monk is...

Why not be tolerant of this virtuous one? The elder monk said, "Look, this one is so wicked and angry, he prostrates to you but not to me." He prostrated anyway. He said, "Venerable, did you see that wicked one?" "Venerable, I saw him." Then he said to him, "Venerable, I have heard others say, and I have seen others say, 'You are one who is ashamed, remorseful, and willing to be taught,' why are you not so?" He said, "Venerable, what should I do? Venerable, why should you not be tolerant of such a virtuous bhikshu?" He explained the matter in detail, and then he was ridiculed. After this happened, the bhikshus reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Bhikshus, it is foolish to ridicule that bhikshu. One should forgive anyone who harbors animosity." The Blessed One said, "One should forgive anyone who harbors animosity." Even if one forgave, but was still not forgiven. The Blessed One instructed, "For those who behave improperly, approach and prostrate. Either say 'May you be free from illness,' or prostrate. If you do not do so, both will be at fault." The Blessed One said, "One should forgive a bhikshu who harbors animosity." Two bhikshus quarreled, exposed each other's faults, fought, and argued over speaking meaningless words. Among them, the younger bhikshu provoked and angered the elder bhikshu with harsh and unpleasant words. He became extremely angry, entered his room, closed the door, and meditated on those evil words he had spoken. During this time, there was nothing that the Buddha, the Blessed One, did not know, did not see, did not understand, and did not fully comprehend. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, by their very nature, possess great compassion, are dedicated to benefiting the world, are the sole protectors and warriors, abide alone in shamatha and vipashyana, are skilled in the three objects of taming, have crossed the four rivers, and have fully mastered the foundations of the four miraculous powers.
