and those who wanted to see the spectacle were drawn to him and went to Jeta Grove. Then, the Blessed One, surrounded by great disciples such as the venerable Kaundinya, Vashpa, Bhadrika, Mahanama, Shariputra, the great Maudgalyayana, Light, Ananda, Nanda, and others, went to King Prasenajit's residence, and the Blessed One spoke in his own language, and then came out of the residence in the same way. Then, the Blessed One led him out of the monastery and sat on the seat that had been laid out at the gate of Jeta Grove, in front of hundreds of thousands of attendants and the community of monks. Then, that venomous snake, looking at the many people around, became frightened and coiled up next to the Blessed One's seat, at the end of its old age, looking at the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to him: "Good-looking one, in this way you have renounced the world in my teachings, and from the four fruits of a renunciate, you will attain one of the fruits of a renunciate, but now you are covered with extreme anger, and having meditated many times, you have also generated a malicious mind towards the monks, so now you are born as a venomous snake. You are attached to harming and killing, taking the lives of others, and living by separating from the lives of others. Where will you be born after you die from here? Where will you be born? Where will you manifest?" When the Blessed One remembered his past life, he began to weep. Then the Blessed One spoke in verse at that time: "You have been born in the realm of animals, even though you were born in a place of leisure, why do you weep meaninglessly? What can be done now? The Victorious One possesses compassion, generate good faith in your heart, abandon this place of animals, and then you will go to the heavens. The Dharma taught by the Buddha, the Blessed One, is not in vain, and he became separated from all those places. Then the Blessed One said to the monk: "Come here, monk, generate patience towards that venomous snake." "Blessed One, how should I generate patience? Does it

He asked, "May I touch your feet?" The Blessed One instructed, "How can he be made to realize that he was a monk in the past, so that there is no doubt? You may touch them." Then, as the Teacher instructed, he touched the feet. And he touched his head to the head of the Buddha. Many people saw this and were greatly amazed. The Blessed One then taught the Dharma to those many people in such a way that, upon hearing it, hundreds of thousands of beings realized great distinction. That venomous snake also developed great faith in the Blessed One, and when it died, it was reborn in the excellent realm of the Thirty-Three Gods. Then the Blessed One said to the monks, "Therefore, monks, both these and others who are completely covered by anger become the object of faults. Therefore, a monk should ask a monk who is covered by anger how he abides in being covered by anger, how he abides in being purified. He should also be patient in his mind. One who is angry in the morning should ask for forgiveness in the afternoon. One who is angry in the afternoon should ask for forgiveness in the evening. One who is angry in the evening should ask for forgiveness the next day." Having said this, the Blessed One arose from his seat and went to the monastery to enter into meditation. By the nature of Dharma, a son or daughter of the gods, not long after being born, thinks: From where did I die and where was I born? What is the karma? He saw that he had died from the body of a venomous snake and was born in the excellent realm of the Thirty-Three Gods, and he developed great faith in the Blessed One. Then the son of the gods, formerly the venomous snake, thought: I have stayed here too long, it is not appropriate to go to the Blessed One immediately. I should stay here for a while before going to see the Blessed One. Then the son of the gods, formerly the venomous snake, adorned his body with spotless earrings, necklaces, and garlands. That very night, he filled his lap with celestial utpala flowers, lotuses, kumuda, pundarika, and mandārava flowers, and shone with light.
