Having arrived at the monastery, the monks became doubtful and reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Monks, it is permissible to confess in front of the forest chief robber, do not doubt this. The story took place in Shravasti. A certain monk was caught by robbers while traveling, and they maliciously said: What are these bald heads doing? Kill them! The monks thought: It seems we are going to be executed. So they said to the robbers: Why are you killing us? The robbers said: The king, the rich, the merchants, and the ship captains have great faith in you, and if you say anything to them, they will harm us for no reason. The monks said: Let us go, we will not say anything to anyone. They said: If you vow to gather and recite on the fifteenth of every month, and tell us in detail, we will let you go. At that time, a certain monk was proficient in the scriptures, and because he was afraid of being killed, he quickly recited the Pratimoksha. They were very convinced and said: Venerable ones, do you fully accept and guard all of this? They said: This venerable one is the teaching of the teacher, why not accept and guard it? They said: Venerable ones, please leave well and do not tell anyone. A healthy monk said: I will not speak. Having said that, they went to the monastery from there. They became doubtful, and because of this, the monks reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Monks, reciting the precepts in front of the forest chief robber is a good recitation, do not doubt this. The story took place in Shravasti. Some monks were traveling from a place called Beu, and were caught by robbers, who said: These bald heads are malicious, what are they going to do? Kill them! At that time, a robber knew about the monks, he saw them and felt compassion.

Having arisen, he could not liberate them, because of compassion, he said, 'How can these beings be killed?' So he bound them to the unharvested grass, robbed them of their possessions, dug a pit, and left them to suffer from hunger and weakness, and then die. One of them said, 'If he speaks like that, what should we do?' Some said, 'It is good to do so.' So they robbed him, bound him to the unharvested grass, and dug a pit. The king of a place called Beu, named Chapo, came with a fourfold army to chase after a fleeing deer. They saw them from afar, and the king asked the minister, 'Is that sight not a deer?' The minister said, 'I do not know.' The king approached them and saw that they were men, and said, 'Are they naked heretics of Jainism?' One of them said, 'Yes, Your Majesty.' Someone who knew about the monks said, 'Your Majesty, they are not naked heretics of Jainism, but monks of the Shakya clan.' 'How do you know?' 'Your Majesty, one shoulder is black, and the other is white.' Then the king asked him, 'Venerable one, why are you like this?' 'Your Majesty, we have been robbed by thieves.' 'Venerable one, then why are you like this?' 'Your Majesty, we are bound like this.' 'Venerable one, why don't you cut such bonds and leave?' 'Your Majesty, the Blessed One has prescribed for us that if we destroy or cause to destroy the dwelling place of seeds and living beings, we will fall into transgression.' The king, hearing this, arose with faith and great joy, untied them, and gave each of them three sets of Dharma robes. They went to the monastery and were in doubt, 'We have spoken of such a transgression before the king.' He told the monks in detail what had happened, and the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'This king is of the Kshatriya caste, anointed from the crown of his head, and is the leader of all the world, so what he has said is correct, do not have doubts about him.'

1. The story takes place in Shravasti. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable, can a monk who has committed an offense confess his offense in front of those who have committed offenses?" Upali replied, "No, he cannot. If the matters are not the same, then he can." The story takes place in Shravasti. A certain monk committed a Sanghavasesa offense and felt remorse. He became pale, emaciated, and weak, and his body did not thrive. The monks said to him, "Venerable, why have you become pale, emaciated, and weak, and your body does not thrive? Tell us your illness." He remained silent. Later, a monk who was friendly with him saw him and asked him. He told the monk in detail. The monk said, "Venerable, if that is the case, you should tell the monks." He replied, "If I say that, I would be a liar." The monk said, "If that is the case, come here. Let us go to another place and confess there." He agreed. He and that monk went together to another place, but on the way, that monk passed away. The monk thought, "The reason I was going was for this matter, but now he has passed away, why should I go? I should go back." So he returned. The monks asked him, "Have you come back safely? Venerable, have you come back safely? Did you fare well?" He began to cry. The monks asked him, "Venerable, why are you crying?" He replied, "Because the monk who went with me has passed away." They said, "Venerable, why are you crying? All conditioned things are like that by nature." He said, "He passed away with the offense still upon him." The monks said, "He will dwell in hell for a long time because of that, so it is right for you to cry." The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Monks, that son of good family has been released from that offense. I have said that the offense is released from the mind, not from the act of punishment. Therefore,
