Because the caretaker did not properly close the door and did not properly inspect it, the thieves found an opportunity to steal. The monks ridiculed, 'That field's debt should be borne by the temple's caretaker.' After the incident, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'Monks, there are five ways to close a door. What are the five? A bolt, a door, a wheel, a door ring, and a crooked key. If all of these are in the temple, and the temple's caretaker put on four locks but not one, then bear one share of the responsibility. If three locks are put on but not two, then bear three shares of the responsibility. If two locks are put on but not three, then bear one-third of the responsibility. If one lock is put on but not four, then bear one-quarter of the responsibility. If all the locks are not put on, then bear all the losses. If the door is closed with all five methods, then if there is a loss, it is simply a loss. Do not let the temple's caretaker bear the debt.' This story occurred when the Buddha was in Shravasti. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, 'Blessed One, you said that the robes of the monks should be made according to the prescribed size. If the cloth is short and the body is long, should it still be made according to the size of the robe?' The Buddha said, 'Upali, then make it according to the size of the body. If the body is short and the cloth is long, should it still be made according to the size of the body?' The Blessed One instructed, 'Upali, if the body is short and the cloth is long, then make it according to the size of the body. If the body is large and the cloth is long, then make it according to the size of the cloth. Otherwise, it is a transgression of the rule. If one finds cloth that exceeds the prescribed size, although it is permissible not to bless it, if it is blessed and made permissible to use, then first say that it belongs to the teacher, the preceptor, or a friend, and then use it.' The ninth verse of the Sutra of the Four Single Doors. In short, the permission of the lower garment, and the mending of the lower garment are the same. The offering of the upper garment, and the acceptance without permission are the same. Sweat and solitary demonstrations should be spoken. The Buddha was residing in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. Monks, because spring has arrived, the lower garments are covered with sweat.

Because the smell was unpleasant, the Blessed One instructed: Wash the lower garment! Also, because the undergarment was sweaty and the smell was unpleasant, the Blessed One instructed: Wash the upper garment! That too was similarly unpleasant in smell. The Blessed One instructed: The lining of the upper garment should be kept, and it should be washed from time to time. The origin of the matter was in Shravasti (Jetavana). When the monks were wearing Dharma robes and doing offerings, those robes were spoiled by odors, powder, and oil, the Blessed One instructed: Whatever is spoiled by odors, wash it; whatever is spoiled by powder, shake it off; whatever is spoiled by oil, wash it with whatever oil clay there is. The origin of the matter was in Shravasti (Jetavana). When the monks were eating food, it fell into the bowl without being given, and they were doubtful and did not eat it. The Blessed One instructed: After giving, eat it! Because there was no giving, the Blessed One instructed: Take away the surrounding area and eat it without doubting! It fell into the soup, the Blessed One instructed: Take away the surrounding area and eat it! If the monks are poor, what I have allowed, when they are not poor, do not do that! If you do, it will be considered a transgression. When the monks went for alms, wind and rain fell, and dust entered the bowl, and they were doubtful and did not eat it, and it was the same when eating in the queue. The Blessed One instructed: Monks, there are these five kinds of dust: edible dust, inedible dust, dust that has been left, dust that has not been left, and dust of dust. Furthermore, there are five kinds of dust: dust of food, dust of drink, dust of clothing, dust of flowers, and dust of fruit, when it is not obvious, all of those are edible, do not doubt, eat it! This is the tenth verse of the Sutra of the Four Single Doors. The Single Doors are all finished. From the Explanation of the Single Doors.
