Concerning the Explanation of the Single Gate: Concerning the Explanation of the Single Gate: The First Explanation of the Single Gate: In the summary of the single gate: Prostration is the first thing to do, second are the uncertain vessels, third are also the implements, that is what is called single. In brief: prostration and offering, likewise sitting and sleeping and dogs, likewise drinking cup, sugar cane wood, likewise butter and roots, trees, etc., the sutras have said are collected. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, two monks were speaking words that were not conducive to liberation, and they spoke harsh words to each other, and the younger one greatly reviled the elder. He entered his dwelling and sat down, thinking, "I have greatly reviled the elder, I should go and ask for forgiveness." So he went to his dwelling and touched his feet with his head, saying, "Venerable one, I have greatly reviled you, please forgive me." And he was very angry and annoyed and harmed him, he said. The monks heard this and ran and asked, "Venerable one, why are you crying out?" He said, "Venerable ones, look at this one, he has come to my dwelling and is harming me." They said to him, "Venerable one, why are you annoying this elder monk?" And he also told what had happened, and they were all silent. He thought, "Therefore, the Bhagavan has said to prostrate, so that my disciples may accomplish their own benefit with a mind of love, a mind of benefit, and a mind of compassion. If he sees me and is displeased or angry, I should apologize to him and leave by any means." Thinking this, he left, and later he did not even prostrate to him, let alone apologize. Then, at a later time, the elder monk was walking, talking, and sitting with another monk. That monk also came from the direction of prostrating to the monks. The monk who was walking with him said to him, "Venerable one,

Why not forgive this virtuous Bhikshu? The elder Bhikshu said, "Look, this person is thus with a sinful mind of anger, look, he prostrates to you but not to me." He prostrated accordingly. He said, "Venerable, did you see that person with a sinful mind?" "Venerable, I saw him." Then he said to him, "Venerable, I have heard and seen elsewhere that you are a shame-conscious, repentant, and willing learner, why are you not like that?" He said, "Venerable, what should I do? Venerable, why should you not forgive such a virtuous Bhikshu?" He explained the details of what happened, and was ridiculed. The Bhikshus reported what happened to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Bhikshus, ridiculing that Bhikshu is foolish, one should forgive anyone who harbors resentment." The Blessed One said, "One should forgive anyone who harbors resentment." Even if someone else forgave, he still would not forgive. The Blessed One instructed, "To someone who is unfriendly, approach with a friendly attitude and prostrate. He will either say 'May you be well' or prostrate. If he does not do so, both will fall into transgression." The Blessed One said, "One should forgive a Bhikshu who harbors resentment." Two Bhikshus quarreled, exposed each other's faults, fought, and argued because of speaking uncertain words. Among the two, the younger Bhikshu angered the elder Bhikshu with harsh and unpleasant words, and extremely angry, he entered his dwelling, closed the door, and meditated on the evil words he had spoken. In the meantime, there was nothing that the Buddha, the Blessed One, did not know, did not see, did not understand, and did not fully know. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are by nature of great compassion, engaged in benefiting the world, the sole protector and hero, abiding alone in Shamatha and Vipassana, skilled in the three objects of taming, having crossed the four rivers, possessing the feet of miraculous power.
