Petition, and the Blessed One spoke thus: A monk who comes suddenly asks a resident monk, "If this monk asks for anything of yours, will you give it or not?" If he says he will not give it, then pay according to its value. If he says he will give it, then taking it is the end of it. The story took place in Shravasti. A monk left a Dharma robe with a resident monk and left a will: "If my disciples come and want it after I am gone, give it to them." Then he left. One of his disciples took the Dharma robe and ran away. That monk took it back, and they quarreled with each other. The monks told the Blessed One about what had happened, and the Blessed One spoke thus: "If he says to give it to the disciple, then his taking it is the end of taking it, but if there is a reason, then give it." The Blessed One said, "If there is a reason, then give it." Announce the reason to everyone, spread it widely, and if others hear it, they will steal it. The Blessed One said, "Secretly state the reason. If someone comes who knows such a reason, then tell him to give it." Some monks were walking on the road, went to the riverbank, and got on a boat. There was another monk on the boat, and the monk who got on the boat said, "My washing utensils, give them to me." He gave the washing utensils, but when he got on the boat, he fell into the water and was carried away by the water. He said, "You lost my washing utensils, you must compensate me." The two quarreled with each other. The monks told the Blessed One about what had happened, and the Blessed One spoke thus: "Ask him if it came into your hand, and if he says it did, then compensate. Otherwise, estimate the value and pay. Other utensils should also be treated in the same way. Just like crossing a river, climbing a mountain, and passing through a pit, etc., should also be treated in the same way. If it comes into your hand, say let go, and if it is lost, then there is nothing to be done." The story took place in Shravasti. In a monastery, the monastery
