A great stupa was being built, and when it was half finished, the man passed away. His son became the householder, and the monks said to him, "Good man, your father has built half of the stupa, please complete it." But he was not a believer, saying, "If those holy ones cannot build it, if the Blessed One allows, I will tear it down and make it smaller." The monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, monasteries can be changed from large to small, or from small to large. But stupas should not be reduced from large to small. If it is made smaller, it will perish along with the deceased." Another householder also began to build a small stupa, and when it was half finished, he passed away. His son became the householder, and the monks said to him, "Good man, your father began to build a stupa, and when it was half finished, he passed away. Now you should complete it." He was very devout, saying, "I am very devout, if the Blessed One allows, I will enlarge it." The monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "If you can tear down the small one and build a large one, then allow it. Do not hesitate. It is the same with old and dilapidated stupas and umbrellas." The Blessed One instructed. Another person lowered an umbrella and passed away before it was raised again. The Blessed One instructed, "Do not lower the former before the latter is completed." Similarly, clay statues became old, and the monks were doubtful and did not remake them. The Blessed One instructed, "Make it the same as before, or even better. But do not make it smaller." Similarly, with painted images, the painters, the monks were doubtful and did not paint them. The Blessed One instructed, "If you paint, repaint the original form." It is the same.

When the scriptures of the Buddha's teachings were damaged, the monks were doubtful and did not write them down. The Blessed One said: If they are damaged, rewrite the Buddha's teachings. The monks went without musical instruments, and the patron Anathapindika said, if the Blessed One allows, then when the image is moved, I will play musical instruments.
