Having spoken, he said, "Householder, do you know the crooked key to the monastery? Do you recognize the key?" He said, "Venerable one, I know it very well." He showed him the key, and he said, "Venerable one, please go, I will also go." He finished speaking. He begged for alms, and the householder also came after him. He gathered the monks and said, "Venerable ones, I have offered plenty of bedding, utensils, and implements here, where are those things?" He told the householder everything that had happened. The householder confessed his mistake and said, "You have done wrong. Since the things are there, can they be taken back now? Or can they not be taken back?" They said, "They cannot be taken back. Venerable one, I did not offer them there, go and take them back." After the matter had occurred, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Do not distribute the things to other monasteries. They should be used according to their designated purpose. Otherwise, they should be repaid to the donor according to their value." The story took place in Shravasti. The group of six monks used the common meadow together with many guests, and when they relieved themselves, fearing feces and dust, they either relieved themselves in front of the guests or behind the guests. Later, many guests were robbed by thieves, and many people lost their belongings and fled. The thieves were unable to take all the belongings, so they picked out the good ones and took them away. The group of six monks followed many guests to that place and saw many abandoned belongings. Then, Nanda and Upananda said, "Pick up the wiping cloth." They also picked out some clothes and took them away. Many guests with bows and arrows and guards returned and recognized the things that the group of six monks had taken. Those people said, "Many guests have been robbed by thieves, but it wasn't us. We just found clothes in the shroud." Those people also said, "This is not clothing from the shroud." They were speechless and sat in silence. After such an event occurred, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: "Monks, it is wrong to mock many guests. Therefore, monks, do not accept the clothes of those who have robbed many guests. Monks, if you take the clothes of those who have robbed many guests, you will incur a transgression." Furthermore, if those who have faith say, "Saints, please enjoy as you wish!" the monks will hesitate and not accept. The Blessed One instructed: "If they say, 'Take it as you wish!' then take it, do not hesitate." The story takes place in Rājagṛha. Those in danger and friends also acted according to the king's command, also for the sake of this grave's clothes, why should you respect the belongings of the dead in a grave with an owner?
