He said, "Please offer these acquired robes to all those who are worthy of offerings, and please enjoy them as you wish." Then, those monks who were free from desire, free from hatred, and free from delusion thought to themselves: The householder Anāthapiṇḍada said this: "To those who are worthy of giving, worthy of excellent giving, worthy of joining palms, worthy of prostration, who are the supreme field of merit, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples who are the worthy recipients of offerings in the world, please offer the acquired robes and enjoy them as you wish." We are supreme, so we have the right to dispose of these acquisitions. However, the Blessed One said, "Monks, you should conceal your virtues and proclaim your faults." How can we proclaim ourselves in order to obtain robes? We are free from desire, free from hatred, and free from delusion. After saying this, they sat in silence. Those who still had remnants of attachment also thought: Because it is offered to the supreme, we still have remnants of attachment, so we have no authority. Thinking this, they sat in silence. Those who were bound by all bonds thought: This is offered to the supreme. Thinking this, they sat in silence. Those who still had remnants of attachment also sat in silence. We are bound by all bonds, so we have no authority whatsoever. Thinking this, they also sat in silence. At that time, none of the monks accepted the robes offered by the householder Anāthapiṇḍada. He thought: Could it be that the noble Saṅgha does not accept my bowl? Thinking this, his body became pale, withered, emaciated, and weak. Then, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada told the Blessed One about this matter. The Buddha, knowing full well,

asked. The Buddha Bhagavan said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, the householder Anathapindika gave clothes to the monks, why didn't they accept them? He said to the venerable householder Anathapindika: The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of giving, very worthy of giving, and they pay homage with folded hands, but they don't want anything. He stated as before up to this point. Thus, none of the monks accepted what was given by the householder Anathapindika. Then, the Bhagavan said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and gather all the monks who reside in Shravasti into the assembly hall. Then, the Venerable Ananda, having heard from the Bhagavan, replied: Yes, Venerable. He gathered all the monks who resided in Shravasti into the assembly hall, and then went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, he bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head, and then sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the Venerable Ananda said to the Bhagavan: Venerable Bhagavan, now is the time, please be aware. All the monks who reside in Shravasti have gathered in the assembly hall. Having heard this, the Bhagavan went to where the assembly hall was, and upon arriving, he sat on the seat that was laid out. Having sat down, the Bhagavan said to the monks: Monks, the householder Anathapindika gathered many clothes to give, why didn't you accept them? The monks remained silent. The Buddha Bhagavan asked knowing full well. The Buddha Bhagavan again asked the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, why are the monks not speaking? He also explained the matter in detail to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan said to the monks: Monks, did you ordain here with me thinking of nirvana? Venerable, yes.
