He resided in the Jeta Grove. In Shravasti, many wondrous things occurred and remained. When the Blessed One resided in Shravasti, the power of the heretics weakened, and they gained little. They took as much as they desired and began to engage in heretical activities. The householder Anathapindika would rise early each morning to go and see the Blessed One. After some time, the householder Anathapindika rose early in the morning and went to the Jeta Grove. The heretics took as much as they desired. They urged him on, and he thought: 'These are the heretics who speak ill of the Dharma and discipline. They take whatever they want and perform heretical activities. The Blessed One has also said to encourage those who do not have faith in the sutras to have complete faith, to bring them in, and to make them laugh.' He thought, 'If the Blessed One allows, I can also encourage many people to offer to the Sangha.' Then he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the householder Anathapindika said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, these heretics who speak ill of the Dharma and discipline take whatever they want and perform heretical activities. If the Blessed One allows, from that and that,' as before, until 'encourage people to offer to the Sangha,' it is the same as before. The Blessed One said: 'In that case, householder, I allow you to take as much as you want and do things for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.' After the Blessed One said, 'Take as much as you want and do things for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha,' the householder Anathapindika began to urge them on. Brahmins and householders said, 'If we could also encourage the noble ones, our merit would increase even more.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks,'

Please help. Brahmins and householders said, "If they call us by our names, it will be good." The Blessed One said, "If the benefactor gives, then call them." The householder also called them, and the Brahmins and householders said, "If the noble ones call us, then we will gain even more merit." The Blessed One said: "Monks, please call them too." After the Brahmins and householders came to the monastery and made offerings, the Blessed One said, "Please call them in the monastery as well." The one who was calling was surrounded by many people and became invisible. The Blessed One said, "Get on the chariot and call out." When heat, rain, and wind occurred, the Blessed One said, "Build a multi-storied house." Because many people were blocking the door, the Blessed One said: "Put four signs on the four doors." Then, the householder Anathapindika took whatever he wanted and accumulated many pairs of clothes, hundreds and thousands of pairs of clothes. He thought to himself, "I have accumulated so many clothes, now I should offer alms to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha, and offer gifts to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha according to seniority." So, he decorated Jeta Grove with various cloths, hung strips of cloth all over the top, and also set up guards, and invited friends, relatives, and brothers as guests. Then, he prepared clean and delicious food and drinks, and together with the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks, invited them to Jeta Grove to enjoy the meal. The next morning, he got up early, spread out the seats, filled the water pot, and then enjoyed the meal with the Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers. After that, he asked the Blessed One: "Venerable One, are there places of offering in the world?" There are two kinds of householders, those who are learning and those who are not learning. Among them, there are eighteen kinds of householders who are learning. There are nine kinds of those who are not learning. What are the eighteen kinds of learners? The fruit of entering the stream

One who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of Stream-enterer, one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of Once-returner, Once-returner, one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of Non-returner, Non-returner, one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of Arhat, one who follows by faith, One who follows by Dharma, one who is liberated by faith, one who is attained by view, one who goes higher and higher, one who is obstructed by one life, one who attains Nirvana in the intermediate state, one who attains Nirvana immediately after birth, one who attains complete Nirvana with effort, one who attains complete Nirvana without effort, and those who ascend upwards - these are called the eighteen learners. What are the nine non-learners? They are: one who declines in Dharma, one who does not decline in Dharma, secret Dharma, Dharma that is subsequently protected, one who dwells immovably, one who does not become fortunate after individual realization, immovable Dharma, one who is liberated by wisdom, and one who is liberated from both parts - these are called the nine non-learners. The Blessed One spoke thus. After the Well-Gone One spoke thus, the Teacher spoke again: Those whose body, speech, and mind are upright, learners and non-learners, dwell in this world. They are worthy of giving and offering. Giving to that supreme field of offering yields great fruit. Then, the householder Anathapindada sat before the old and sick, and having arranged the words to be spoken, at the time of praising the noble ones, he spoke thus: 'Whatever is the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples, worthy of giving, most worthy of giving, worthy of joining palms, worthy of bowing, the support of the unsurpassed field of merit in the world, offer these clothes to them, please accept them as you please.' Then, the Bhikshu who makes the praise, sitting before the old and sick, speaks thus: 'Venerable ones! The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples, worthy of giving, most worthy of giving, worthy of joining palms, worthy of bowing, the unsurpassed field of merit, the world'
