The person said, "Venerable ones, I gave him the cloth as a gift, but not the thread and the wages." The monks did not know what to do. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to the monks, "Tell the weaver to speak the truth and have him compensate for the cloth." The monks called the weaver. The person said, "Venerable ones, I gave him coarse cloth as a gift." The Blessed One said, "Monk, let him compensate as he gave in the past." This incident occurred in Shravasti. A monk gave a cloth seller a karshapana (梵文天城体:कार्षापण,梵文罗马拟音:kārṣāpaṇa,汉语字面意思:karshapana), saying, "Give me a piece of cloth." After that monk passed away, the monks called the cloth seller and said, "Venerable one, this monk named so-and-so gave you the price of the cloth, come and pay it back." The person said, "Venerable ones, I gave him the cloth as a gift." The monks did not know what to do. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to the monks, "Tell that cloth seller to speak the truth and have him compensate for the cloth." The monks called the cloth seller, and the person said, "Venerable ones, I offered him coarse cloth." The Blessed One said, "That monk has passed away, let him compensate as he gave in the past." The Vinaya Scripture, Volume Thirty-seven. This incident occurred in Shravasti. The group of six monks became famous among the laity. Whoever bought or sold anything would go to them and ask, "Venerable ones, how much is this worth?" Later, in Shravasti, there were two householders, one buying cloth and one selling cloth. As they were discussing the price, the Venerable Ananda came in that direction. The two people said, "The Venerable Ananda's decision is authoritative." One person said, "It should be considered that way." Then, the two of them said to the Venerable Ananda, "Venerable one, how much is this cloth worth?" The Venerable Ananda secretly said to one person:

Asked, "Fair one, are you buying or selling?" He said, "I am buying." Nede said, "This is worth twenty karshapanas." Again, secretly asked the second person, "Fair one, are you buying or selling?" He said, "Venerable, I am selling." Nede said, "This is worth forty karshapanas." He secretly deceived these two, and again in front of both of them said, "Do as you please." Among them, the one who was selling said, "This is worth forty karshapanas." The one who was buying said, "I believe, I think this is worth twenty karshapanas." He said, "Who do you believe, who do you trust?" He replied, "It is the Venerable Nede." "He knowingly cheated us both, saying to me that this is worth forty karshapanas." He said, "He also knowingly cheated me, in order to deceive us both, in short, he acts in the same way as the lower realms, and even if there is a need in the future, do not ask him." After this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Monks, the rebuke of those two householders is justified. Therefore, monks, do not evaluate any object. Do not sit in the midst of householders arguing. Any monk who evaluates any object, sits in the midst of householders arguing, will incur an offense." The Blessed One said that a monk should not evaluate any object, but a monk, wanting to buy robes and clothes, went to the market, and there, together with the householders, raised the price, one karshapana, or one pana, or four panas, or a quarter, or half of a quarter, or half of half of a quarter. They angrily said, "Venerable, we are merchants, and you are even greater price raisers." After this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Monks, it is right that they say that. Therefore, a monk should not buy himself. The Blessed One said that a monk should not buy himself.

Thus he said, "Do not do." The monks did not know how to buy, so the Blessed One instructed, "Look for the layperson who lives in the monastery. If someone lives in the monastery, or if a layperson has no faith but definitely wants to buy, then you should say two or three times a definite answer. Do not raise the price by means of karshapanas and so on. Whether a monk wants to buy or does not want to buy, if he raises the price two or three times by means of karshapanas and so on, and speaks, he will become transgressed. There is no fault in raising the price for the sake of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha." This is the eighth verse of the Sutra of the Four Doors of the Topics. In short, one should not make a living by laboring with roots. The four types are not to be divided. Protect and also increase. Emit many loud noises. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Sanctuary, in Rajagriha. At that time, King Bimbisara offered to the Sangha of monks a grove with a thousand edible tree trunks. At that time, the monks ate the fruits and threw them away carelessly, so it became like a forest of arrows. Then, at a later time, the king went that way, and when he saw them, he said to the ministers, "Whose is this grove that has become like a forest of arrows?" The ministers replied, "O god, this grove with a thousand edible tree trunks was offered to the noble ones by the gods. They ate the fruits and threw them away carelessly, so now it has become like a forest of arrows." The king said, "Alas, do those noble ones not take care of and work on this?" The ministers replied, "O god, they are engaged in meditation and recitation, so they do not do these chores and caretaking." The king remained silent. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, do not carelessly discard things that are the livelihood of roots, but do work." The monks did not know who should do the work, so the Blessed One instructed, "Let those who dwell there do it." Those who are old
