From the Vinaya, the Holy Dharma. From the Vinaya, the Holy Dharma. Explaining the method of subduing, Volume Two. The Vinaya, the Holy Dharma, Volume Twenty-Three. In brief: Two children and three hunchbacks, letters and the field of the Sangha, implements and pegs, wood and two kinds of bird nests. The Venerable Great Maudgalyayana liberated the sons of Anathapindika, as it is said in the extensive explanation. A certain householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to a parasol offering. When the Buddha and the Sangha of monks arrived, a wandering monk was sitting in the monastery begging for alms. At that time, the sons of Anathapindika were playing in Jeta Grove, and the wicked ones stole from them. The monk heard about this. He learned a mantra, and not long after, he thought, "I should awaken them with this mantra." So he recited the mantra, and those wicked ones were surrounded by four divisions of troops, and they abandoned the children and fled. When the monks heard about this, they said to the monk, "This is a defeat." The monk felt remorse. The Blessed One said, "Monk, what did you think, that you liberated the children?" He replied, "I thought the mantra awakened them." The Blessed One said, "There is no fault in reciting the mantra." In the land of Kosala, the Sangha distributed monastic robes. A base monk went to another village, and he had two companions. They each received the robes of the preceptor. After they received them, they asked each other, "Did you receive the robes of the preceptor?" "You received them, and I also received them, so who was not allowed to receive them, and thus committed a defeat, is not known." The Blessed One said, "There is no fault in receiving, but let others know." In the land of Kosala, the Sangha distributed robes. A base monk went to another village. That monk had a friend, and he received his robes.

Then he came and said, 'Venerable one, this is your robe, I took it and came.' He said, 'I did not entrust it to you.' That bhikkhu felt remorse. The Blessed One said, 'There is no pārājika offense; do not take what is found without being entrusted. If you take it, it becomes a duṣkṛta offense.' When the robes were distributed in Kosala, a bhikkhu was sick, and his attendant took his robe and went away with it. That bhikkhu also passed away, and that bhikkhu did not know what to do. The Blessed One said, 'If he passed away earlier and it was taken later, then it should be returned immediately. But if it was taken earlier and he passed away later, then it should be treated like other belongings.' One bhikkhu said to another bhikkhu, 'Venerable one, come here. Even if you take something small without being given, it will not constitute an offense.' The bhikkhus heard this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'The value should be calculated with one combination.' A householder was plowing the Saṃgha's field, and a base bhikkhu came and said, 'Householder, either give me a share or do not plow the field.' But he did not listen and continued to plow. That bhikkhu lay down on the tip of the plow. Then that householder abandoned the plow and reviled, abandoned, and spoke unpleasant words, saying, 'May I be separated from such a śramaṇa.' That bhikkhu felt remorse. The Blessed One said, 'There is no offense. From now on, a bhikkhu should not make his body unsightly in this way.' One bhikkhu said to another bhikkhu, 'Venerable one, come here. Even if we steal the property of a stupa, it will not constitute an offense for us two.' The Blessed One said, 'Bhikkhus, if the property of a stupa has a guardian, then if the value is sufficient, it will constitute a pārājika offense.' A base bhikkhu had the Saṃgha's field plowed. Not long after that, a householder was also plowing the field. That householder came and said, 'Venerable one, do not plow my field.' He said, 'This is not yours, it is the Saṃgha's.'

field. The monk said, "I have shown that the non-human is mine." Then, that householder dug out the stake that had been driven into the boundary earlier. After digging it out and showing it, he left the hoe and went away. After that householder left, the monk moved the stake inward and plowed the field. When the householder returned, he said, "Monk, since I have won, why are you still plowing the field?" The monk felt remorse. The Blessed One taught, "If the elements are complete, then it becomes a defeat." A monk took a flower tree from a householder without permission, and the monk felt remorse. The Blessed One taught, "If the elements are complete, then it becomes a defeat." The fruit tree is also the same. A tree grew in the monk's walking place, and magpies built a nest on it. They dropped branches and made noises while the monks were walking. The monks destroyed their nest, and they made noises. The Blessed One taught, "Ananda, Ananda, why are you scolding the magpies for making noises?" The monks did it to destroy the magpies' nest. Do not destroy the magpies' nest! Whoever destroys it commits a fault. The monk destroyed the magpies' nest and boiled dye, and the situation is the same in detail. In short, radishes, trees, fruits, leaves, flowers, these three kinds, stealing horses and riders, crossing boats, and jewels. When he was in Shravasti, a householder had a radish field, and a monk went there and said, "Please give me radishes." The householder said, "Venerable one, please pay." The monk said, "No pay." "How can I give without pay?" "Please give freely for the sake of the Dharma." The householder said, "Venerable one, if everyone who comes here is given freely, then we will have no food or clothing at all." The monk said, "Will you not give even a little? Will you not give anything at all?" Then, he withered the radish field with a mantra. The Blessed One taught, "Although it is not a defeat, it becomes a grave offense." Just like the radish field, the tree field, the leaf field, and the fruit field are also the same. A horse is eating grass, and the monk...
