Having said this, they spread out the bedding, entered the dwelling and bedding arrangements, and without allocating to the newcomers, the group of six slept a little from morning onwards. The next morning, they got up early, returned the bedding, and left. The monks asked, "Why did you return the bedding?" They replied, "Venerable ones, we came to pay homage to the stupa, and now we are returning." They said, "Venerable ones, if that is the case, what are you doing disturbing the monks all night?" They replied, "Venerable ones, we did it to strengthen the teachings, what fault is there in us?" The monks criticized them. After this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, do not allocate bedding at night until late evening. If someone arrives suddenly at night, they should stay in whatever place they like. If they are still staying there when morning comes, then allocate dwellings and give bedding as well." The origin of the story is that it was in Shravasti. The group of six were using bedding and then went from there to another mountain village, arriving at a monastery in that mountain village, where the monks placed them in whatever place they liked. Then, when they were about to allocate bedding, they insisted on sitting on the seats of the elders, and the elders were unable to make them get up. When the bedding was allocated, they used the seats of the elders together, and gave them to their close associates, and those who did not receive bedding were ridiculed. After this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, it is wrong to ridicule the new monks. Therefore, the seats of the elders, and even the smaller cushions, should be allocated in order of seniority." The ending of the story is the third verse of the Sutra of the Four Doors. In short: The place for wiping and the place for washing, the place for urinating and washing feet, the wiping container and the spoon, all kinds of things are like that. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying in Shravasti, in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The group of six...

Those people lingered at the door of the outer toilet, chatting and talking, thereby hindering the monks. They said, "Venerable ones, please wait a moment, we will go first." So they urinated and defecated near the toilet, and also recited scriptures and engaged in cooking and other activities. The monks were even ashamed to go to the outer toilet, and could not freely relieve themselves. They also prevented the monks from entering the toilet as they had come. All of these became problems. The monks reported these situations to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, monks, when going to the outer toilet, do not chat and talk, do not urinate and defecate nearby, do not read, do not recite scriptures, and do not engage in cooking and other activities. Monks, if you chat and talk in the toilet, act out of order, urinate and defecate nearby, recite scriptures, read, or engage in cooking and other activities, you will commit an offense entailing expulsion." When the monks were washing, before they had finished, the group of six monks said, "We are old." Then they forcibly pulled them away. The monks reported these situations to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, in the washing place, do not forcibly pull away a monk before he has finished washing. If you forcibly pull him away, you will commit an offense entailing expulsion." When the monks went to the place for urination, later the group of six monks came there and said, "How should we old people enter in order?" Then they began to mock. The monks reported these situations to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, do not forcibly insert yourselves in the place for urination, enter in the order in which you came. Monks, if you enter as if forcibly inserting yourselves, you will commit an offense entailing expulsion." The group of six monks saw the monks washing their feet, and before they had finished, they said, "We will use the foot-washing place first." Then they took away the foot-washing stand and began to mock. The monks reported these situations to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, do not take away the foot-washing stand of the monks before they have finished washing their feet.

Do not disrespect as if they were elders. If a monk takes away the foot-washing basin as if it were an elder before the monk has finished washing his feet, he will incur a transgression. The group of six monks said, "The face cloths should be treated as elders before the monks have finished wiping their faces with them." Then they took the face cloths, and they were ridiculed. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Monks, do not treat the face cloths as elders before the monks have finished using them. If a monk takes away the face cloths as if they were elders before the monks have finished using them, he will incur a transgression." Similarly, containers, spoons, lids, and so on should also be explained in detail. This is the fourth verse of the Four Doors Sutra from the Discourse. In short: a vase and a basin, a black begging bowl and a drinking cup, a razor sharpener and nail clippers, a thorn and a footstool. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. The group of six monks, before the monks had finished doing the dyeing work, said, "The Sangha's dye pot should be treated as an elder." Then they took the dye pot, and they were ridiculed. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Monks, do not treat the Sangha's dye pot as an elder before the monks have finished doing the dyeing work. If a monk takes away the Sangha's dye pot as if it were an elder before the monks have finished doing the dyeing work, he will incur a transgression." Just as it is for the vase, so it is for the basin. The group of six monks said, "The black begging bowl should be treated as an elder before the monks have finished eating." Then they took the black begging bowl, and they were ridiculed. The monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Monk, do not treat the black begging bowl as an elder before the monks have finished eating. If a monk takes away the black begging bowl as if it were an elder before the monks have finished eating, they will incur a transgression."
