If (the Buddha) said, "Please bring a cup to drink from afterwards," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a needle case," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a container for eye medicine," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. This is the fourth verse of the third chapter on the door of origination. In short, cups and thread ornaments, as well as footstools and footrests, washing medicine and rewards, and the Dharma robes of the deceased. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a medicine cup," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a thread ornament," how should I hold it? Upali, that is made of seven threads, namely wool, bark fiber, cotton, hemp, Dugu grass, Kutamba bark, and silk thread. If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a footrest," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. If the monk, the Blessed One, said, "Please bring a bed and a footrest," how should I hold it? Upali, that is not made of precious jewels. The origination is in Shravasti. In Shravasti, another householder became ill, and he asked the doctor, "Venerable one, if I have such a disease, please tell me the method of treatment." The doctor said, "Householder, first eat oil, and then take a purgative." That person began to eat oil. After a while, a monk who was approaching his village came and asked, "What is the householder doing?" That person explained the situation in detail. The monk said, "Householder, I am very skilled at taking purgatives."

He said, "Please give me the alms given to the doctor, and I will give you a laxative." The householder said, "Okay, I will do so." Then he gave him the laxative, and then stood up and went to the monastery. After the householder's laxative was used up, his relatives went and asked the doctor, "What should be done if the householder uses a laxative?" they asked. The doctor asked, "Who gave him the laxative?" They said, "It was given by this person called 'Arya'." The doctor got angry and went to ask him. Those people said that he had recovered from death and became like this. The monks told the Blessed One about this. The Blessed One said, "Therefore, monks, do not accept bribes, and do not give medicine. Even if you give a laxative, do not leave alone. If such a thing happens, go and consult a doctor. If you leave without doing so, you will also commit a transgression." The origin of the story is that when he was in Shravasti, a creditor caught a debtor. The creditor said to him, "Give it to me at such and such a time." Then he let him go. The man thought, "Even though the time has been agreed upon, I will not be able to repay it on time, so I might as well run away when the time comes." Later he thought again, "Leaving the homeland is also very painful, so I might as well kill the creditor." Thinking like this, he killed the creditor on the way to Jeta Grove. After a while, the six groups of monks saw the body, and they thought, "We can find clothes in the rag." So they began to strip the clothes of the dead. The relatives of the dead came to that place, saw this scene, and began to cry, saying, "You killed him!" They said, "We did not kill him, he was killed by a ghost or an enemy." The monks told the Blessed One about this. The Blessed One said, "Monks, it is reasonable for his relatives to have doubts. Therefore, monks, do not take things from such rags. When many people know about it, then you can take it. If you do not do so, you will also commit a transgression."

Finished. The fifth verse of the third chapter of the Discourse on the Basis of Discussion. The Holy Vinaya Scripture, Volume Thirty-Five. In summary: Iron ball and medicine bowl, Carrying on the back, waist, and head, Clothes and food for parents, The three woolen Dharma robes. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Venerable Bhagavan, you said to hold the iron ball with an iron chain, how should the iron chain be placed? Upali, it is not made of precious jewels. Venerable Bhagavan, you said to sell the medicine bowl, how should it be held? Upali, it is not made of precious jewels. Venerable Bhagavan, you said that monks should not carry burdens on their backs, waists, and heads, then should nuns also not carry burdens on their backs, waists, and heads? Upali, nuns also should not carry burdens on their backs, waists, and heads. If they carry them, they will incur a transgression. The origin of the discussion is in Shravasti: In Shravasti, another householder took a wife from the same caste, and together they enjoyed play and amusement. After enjoying play and amusement together, after some time, his wife became pregnant, and after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son who was well-formed, beautiful, virtuous, and complete in all his limbs. They held a great birth celebration for him and gave him a name. He was raised and grew up, and after some time, without asking his parents, he went forth into the teachings of the Bhagavan. One morning, having put on his lower garment, he took his bowl and Dharma robes and went to Shravasti for alms. His old father saw him and said: Son, if you have gone forth, who will support us? From that moment on, he did not say a word. The monks reported this to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan instructed: Monks, parents are the ones who labor for their sons.
