Confessing their faults, those alms-seekers sat in shame, speechless due to embarrassment. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Monks, those donors will laugh, therefore monks should not sit on cushions and shave their heads. After the Blessed One instructed the monks not to sit on cushions and shave their heads, the monks shaved their heads in dwellings, open spaces, and gatehouses, which became a target of faults. The Blessed One instructed: Do not shave your heads in the place where the Sangha does sweeping. If you shave, you will commit a transgression. The Blessed One said: Do not shave your heads in the place where the Sangha does sweeping. Some monks became old, frail, and emaciated. Some monks became ill and could not go outside. Even those who were not sick were harmed by the heat and rain, and could not go out. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Those monks who are old, frail, and emaciated, and those who are sick and uncomfortable, may shave their heads in the place where they shaved before. If those who are not sick are inconvenienced by the heat and rain and cannot go out, they may also shave their heads in the place where they shaved before. In all places, the ground should be swept, or have someone sweep it. Gather the hair and throw it into the garbage heap. Cutting nails is also the same rule. For those who are already uncomfortable, an exception can be made, but those who are not uncomfortable should not do so. If they do, they will commit a transgression. The story took place in Shravasti. At that time, a monk became ill, and he was treated with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, and fruits, but his illness did not improve. Soon after, a doctor came to the monastery, and the monks said to him: Wise one, if a monk like this becomes ill, please provide a medical method. The doctor said: Give this venerable one some flour in the morning, and he will be cured. They...

The one with a handsome face said, "If the Blessed One does not allow eating flour in the afternoon, how can we eat flour in the afternoon?" He said, "Noble ones, your teacher is compassionate and will allow it." When this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Monks, just as toothless old cows eat barley, such a thing happens. Therefore, allow the flour made from barley eaten by old cows to be given. Do not hesitate. Even if the flour is given, it does not heal." The monks asked the doctor in detail, and the doctor said, "Noble ones, this has lost its taste and is of no use. Make flour from other barley and give it." When this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Therefore, make flour from barley that others have not eaten, filter it carefully, and give it." The Blessed One thus instructed. The monks did so, but it still did not heal. The monks asked the doctor in detail, and the doctor said, "Noble ones, make tsampa and give it, and it will heal." When this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "If the doctor advises so, then make tsampa from flour and give it. Likewise, make dough from flour, or anything else, give it all! Do not hesitate." The origin of the matter was in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, another monk became ill. He was treated with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, and fruits, but did not heal. One day, a doctor came to the monastery, and the monks asked: "Handsome one, this monk is ill, what method should be used to treat him? Please explain the science of medicine." The doctor said, "Noble ones, give him meat broth in the afternoon, and he will heal." They said, "Handsome one, if the Blessed One does not allow eating in the afternoon, how can he drink meat broth in the afternoon?" He said, "Noble ones, your teacher is compassionate and will allow it." That's how it is.

When those ordained monks petitioned the Blessed One, the Blessed One instructed: Monks, there is an animal called a bear, and the way it eats meat is like this, so it is permitted to extract juice from the meat eaten by the bear and give it. Do not doubt this. They extracted juice from the meat eaten by the bear and gave it, but it still did not heal. The monks inquired of the doctor in detail, and the doctor said: Venerable ones, that has already lost its potency, please make it from fresh meat, and it will heal. After this happened, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: If the doctor orders to extract juice from fresh meat and give it, then it is permitted to extract juice from fresh meat, filter it with gauze, and give it. The monks did so, but it still did not heal. The monks inquired of the doctor in detail, and the doctor said: Venerable ones, please give ink. After this happened, the monks petitioned the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: If the doctor orders to give ink, then give it. And all the other chopped and dried things, give them all. Do not doubt this. This is the third verse of the third chapter of the Matters of Discussion. In short, smoking pipes and face cloths, nasal drops and bowls, needles and eye ointments, these are all permitted by the great sage. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, you said that smoking pipes are allowed, what kind of smoking pipe should one hold? Upali, except for those made of precious jewels. Venerable Blessed One, you said that face cloths are allowed, what kind of face cloth should one hold? Those made of wool, those made of flax, and those made of cotton. Venerable Blessed One, you said that nasal drops are allowed, what kind of nasal drop container should one hold? Upali, except for those made of precious jewels. Venerable Blessed One
