From one who possessed everything, a great birth celebration was held for his birth, and he was given a name. He was raised and grew strong. Later, he went to Jeta Grove, where he was ordained into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya of the Blessed One, and he became proficient in the three baskets. He thought to himself: The Blessed One has said, "Monks, parents are difficult to repay for their children. They are beneficial, they nurture, they give birth, they nurse, they show the various Jambudvipa. Even if a son carries his mother on one shoulder and his father on the other, carrying them for a full hundred years, or if he were to offer or rule with a great earth filled with jewels, mani jewels, lapis lazuli, conch shells, crystal, gold, silver, Asmagarva, Spuga, and right-spiraling conch shells, he would still not repay the kindness of his parents or come close to repaying it. But if someone causes his parents, who lack faith, to generate perfect faith, correctly exhorts them, tames them, guides them, and establishes them; or from bad conduct, causes them to generate perfect conduct; from stinginess, causes them to generate perfect generosity; from corrupt wisdom, causes them to generate perfect wisdom, correctly exhorts them, tames them, guides them, and establishes them, such a person repays the kindness of his parents and comes close to repaying it." Thinking this, he thought, "I too must do something beneficial for my parents," and so he wandered and dwelt as long as he pleased, and then he wandered towards where Shravasti was. Gradually wandering, he eventually arrived in Shravasti. He established both of them in refuge and in the precepts. Then, at a later time, he spoke in detail to his father about the qualities of the seven things that are done for merit with wealth, and the father said, "Venerable one, I too shall do some meritorious deeds with the seven kinds of wealth." He said, "Old man, do it well." "What should I do? Build a bathhouse." He built a bathhouse, and that householder himself began to work in his own bathhouse, very...

Then he became very tired, and there was a lot of washing equipment, butter, flour, and so on left over. Then he said, "Son, I am very tired, please rub my back a little." The son said, "Father, the Blessed One has taught that one should not serve foxes like lions, so I will not help you." The son asked, "What do you mean by lion and fox?" The father said, "I am like a lion, and you are like a fox." The son asked, "Why?" The father said, "I have discipline, and you have bad discipline." The son said, "How could someone like me, who is like a fox, give birth to someone like you, who is like a lion?" After the monks reported this to the Blessed One, the Blessed One taught: "Monks, in whatever family, if they truly please their parents, truly make offerings to their parents, and truly support their parents in comfort, that family is with Brahma. Why is that? Because a son of the family treats his parents according to the Dharma and acts according to the rules, that is called Brahma. Monks, in whatever family, if they truly please their parents, truly make offerings to their parents, and truly serve their parents in comfort, that family is with the teacher. Why is that? Because if a son of the family treats his parents according to the Dharma, he will become like a teacher. Monks, in whatever family, if they truly please their parents, truly make offerings to their parents, and truly serve their parents in comfort, that family is worthy of receiving offerings. Why is that? Because if a son of the family treats his parents according to the Dharma, he is worthy of receiving offerings. Monks, in whatever family, if they truly please their parents, truly make offerings to their parents, and truly serve their parents in comfort, that family is with fire. Why is that? Because if a son of the family treats his parents according to the Dharma, it is like fire. Monks, in whatever family, if they truly please their parents, truly make offerings to their parents, and truly serve their parents in comfort, that family is with the gods. Why is that? Because if a son of the family treats his parents according to the Dharma, he will become like a god." After the Blessed One taught this, the Sugata said these words, and the Teacher spoke again:
