Search thoroughly for those that are pure. If that is not available, give me a small bowl. If a monk ordains without a bowl, he will be considered as having transgressed. The origin of the story is that while in Shravasti, the venerable Maha-Katyayana had a young attendant who held a bowl. He washed both his bowl and my bowl. Since the two bowls were similar, he did not know which was his and which was the teacher's. Later, one day, he wrote the words "Teacher Maha-Katyayana's bowl" on the venerable Maha-Katyayana's bowl. Later, another householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house for a meal. That householder had a courtesan whom he had previously frequented. He sent a message to her saying, "Good woman, I have invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks for a meal, so please come and offer food with your own hands." However, she was unable to come due to some pressing matter. The Blessed One and the Sangha of Hearers were served a meal. After the merits of giving were explained, they departed. The young attendant who held the venerable Maha-Katyayana's bowl thought, "I will wash the bowl at that house and then leave," and remained there. The householder said, "Venerable, please lend me the bowl for a moment. I want to send some leftovers from the bowl to a friend." He said, "I will not give mine, give the venerable Maha-Katyayana's bowl." The householder filled it with clean food and drink and sent it to the courtesan, sending a message, "Good woman, I have satisfied the Buddha and the Sangha of monks with such food. Please rejoice in it." She poured out the food and saw writing on the bottom of the bowl. The courtesan was skilled in eighteen arts, and she read the writing. Seeing the name of the venerable Maha-Katyayana, she thought, "I have sent the bowl of the noble one, who is worshipped by gods and humans, in this manner!" So she wiped the bowl clean, and then...

Having filled it with fragrant flowers, she placed it on top of what was painted with colorful pigments. Kneeling beside it, she offered incense with sandalwood. Then, another man came to her with five hundred karshapanas (kārṣāpaṇa), perfumes, and garlands, and said, "Beautiful woman, what are you doing? Come, enjoy everything!" She said, "Make offerings to the bowl, wait a moment!" She said, "Where did this bowl come from? Whose is it?" She explained in detail what had happened. He said, "You give alms even to all the peculiar things, and you don't even let go of the renunciates!" She covered her ears and said, "Do not commit such sins, for they will cause beings to fall into hell!" Even though she said this, he did not abandon his evil deeds. After this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "Monks, if one writes what should not be written, it will become a target of fault. Therefore, monks, do not write what should not be written!" The Blessed One said to the monks, "Do not ask what should not be asked!" The monks did not know what should not be written, and the Blessed One taught, "There are five things that should not be written: all Pratimoksha vows, those who possess Pratimoksha vows, all Vinaya, all those who possess Vinaya, and individual pudgalas (persons)." There is no fault in making things with signs. This is the first verse of the third chapter of 'The Door of the Beginning.' In short, the novice broke the bowl. How should the bowl be burned? It should be allowed to burn the covering. The great sage allowed it. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove (Jetavana Vihāra) in Shravasti (Śrāvastī), the pleasure garden for giving food to the unprotected. Another monk had a novice hold the bowl, and the novice was not mindful, so the bowl fell from his hand and broke. That monk became distressed. After this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "Monks, if the monks have a novice hold the bowl, it will become a target of fault."

It became like this. Therefore, monks, do not have the novices wash the alms bowls. The Blessed One said to the monks: Do not have the novices wash the alms bowls. The novice of the Venerable Shariputra, named Patzunda, holding the alms bowl, he said: Abbot, give me the alms bowl, I will wash it. He said: Child, the Blessed One has established the training, monks should not have the novices wash the alms bowls, you go away, I will wash it myself. He said: Abbot, will I also become a fault because of this? He said: Child, the Buddha, the Blessed One, is the owner of the Dharma, what should I do? After things became like this, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: For those novices who are mindful, you can let them wash, do not hesitate about this. This incident happened in Shravasti. The monks ate food in the alms bowl, and because it was not cleaned, worms grew and the bowl cracked. After things became like this, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Burn the alms bowl. After the Blessed One said to burn the alms bowl,
