It is not allowed to punish the four monks who have been given instructions. The Blessed One said, "It is not allowed to punish the four monks who have been given instructions." The monks punished one who had been given three instructions and was abiding properly. They punished two who had been given two instructions and were abiding properly. The monks punished three who had been given one instruction and were abiding properly. When this happened, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Do not punish those who have been given four instructions. Do not punish one who has been given three instructions and is abiding properly. Do not punish two who have been given two instructions and are abiding properly. Do not punish three who have been given one instruction and are abiding properly, but punish four or more who are completely pure. As for how to punish, including raising the punishment from the root, raising it again from the root, making them satisfied, raising it from the root and making them satisfied, and raising it again from the root and making them satisfied, it should be done in the same way." Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, "When giving instructions, is it permissible to give faith?" Upali replied, "It is not permissible. If it touches the nature of Dharma, then it is permissible." Venerable one, is it permissible to receive faith from the one who gives instructions? Upali replied, "If one regards this person as a monk, then it is permissible." The tenth verse of the Sutra of the Second Door of the Discourse ends, and the Second Door ends. The Third Door of the Discourse is explained: In brief: mandala, bowl, bathhouse, smoke, drink, mouth cup, iron, hair, center of the chariot wheel, door frame, lamp, stupa. In short: the mandala is the place where the gods reside, and half and a third of the place do not reside. One should not ordain without a bowl, nor should one write on the bowl. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. The monks washed their bowls wherever they happened to be, and that place was filled with bees and became disgusting. Brahmins and householders saw it and said unpleasant things, saying, "Are these people urinating and defecating here?"

They said, "We have not urinated or defecated here; we have washed our bowls." They said, "Venerable ones, you should not make mandalas here." From then on, they remained silent. They mocked, saying, "The sons of the Śākya ascetics are impure; they wash their bowls wherever they happen to be." When the monks told the Blessed One about this, the Blessed One said to the monks, "The Brahmins and householders are justified in their mockery. Therefore, monks, do not wash your bowls wherever you happen to be, but make a mandala in the place where you have washed your bowls." The Blessed One said, "Make a mandala." The monks then made a round mandala in the place where they had washed their bowls. When the Brahmins and householders came to the monastery and saw the mandala between the dwellings, they asked, "What is this?" Some said, "What is the use of knowing this? The sons of the Śākya ascetics worship the sun." Others said, "That is indeed so; it is true that the sons of the Śākya ascetics worship the sun." When the monks told the Blessed One about this, the Blessed One said, "Therefore, do not make a mandala like the sun." The Blessed One said, "Do not make a mandala like the sun." The monks then made a mandala like a crescent moon. The Brahmins and householders came to the monastery again and said, "The sons of the Śākya ascetics worship the moon." When the monks told the Blessed One about this, the Blessed One said, "Therefore, do not make a mandala like the moon either." The monks then began to make a square mandala. The Brahmins and householders came to the monastery again and said, "The sons of the Śākya ascetics worship the bull." When the monks told the Blessed One about this, the Blessed One said, "Therefore, do not make a square or two-shaped mandala, but make a
