Then (the Buddha) commanded, saying, "Make it like a peak and a valley." The monks did not know what to do. The Blessed One then commanded: "Smear it with cow dung, earth, or water." The Blessed One said: "Make two mandalas." After saying this, the monks made two such mandalas for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and were satisfied with them. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One commanded: "For the Three Jewels, whether it is the sun or the moon, express devotion in all ways, and do not doubt it." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. After that, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, those who give alms and the patrons should always please the gods who receive the food offerings in three ways, offer them properly, and make them happy properly. What are these three? Always perform clean sweeping, always do the work of food offerings, and always dedicate the merits of the offerings. Monks, if those who give alms and the patrons always please the gods who receive the food offerings, offer them properly, and make them happy properly, then those who give alms and the patrons will be loved again because of their joyful hearts." The Blessed One said this, and after the Sugata said these words, the Teacher said again: "Whatever faithful person worships the gods, he acts according to the Teacher's words, and he will be praised by the Buddhas." Wherever there are wise, learned, and disciplined people residing, one should proclaim the offering of food and excellent generosity. If they are forgotten, they will be forgotten. If offerings are made, they will be offered. Then, like a mother loving her child, the gods will also love these people. Those who are loved by the gods will see happiness and goodness. The Blessed One said that if a faithful person worships the gods, he acts according to the Teacher's words, and he will be praised by the Buddhas. The group of six monks offered to the wall gods, forest gods, four-way intersection gods, three-way intersection gods, and worldly gods, etc.

Then, all the offerers, and the believing Brahmins and householders, blamed these noble ones, saying, "If one ordains to practice these virtuous Dharma and Vinaya, one would thus eat flesh and blood, bones, and fat, and offer to those who kill other beings. We, as lay practitioners, have long abandoned these. Yet, these ones are still making offerings!" They openly accused, imposed penalties, and spoke ill, and the monks refuted them. They said, "Why, venerable ones, did the Blessed One not say that whoever, male or female, with faith, if they make offerings to the gods, it is done according to the teacher's instructions, and even praised by the Buddhas? Are we not faithful? Why are we not allowed to make offerings?" The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, what I said was directed towards the householders, not towards the monks. Therefore, monks should not make offerings to the gods." The Blessed One said, "Monks, do not make offerings to the gods." The group of six monks then began to harm them. Those monks appeared in dreams, saying, "What wrong have we done that you harm us so?" Unbelieving Brahmins and householders also mocked the noble ones, saying, "What harm have these people done to you that you treat them like this?" The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Neither make offerings to them, nor harm them." The group of six monks, walking on the road, seeing the dwellings of the gods, detoured and walked on rough and thorny paths. As a result, some monks were pricked by reeds, some were pricked by thorns, and some slipped and fell. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Do not detour, walk on the straight path. At the dwellings of the gods, ring the bell, recite the verses spoken from the mouth, and do not hesitate." The story took place in Shravasti. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One.

The monks, the Blessed One, taught that the attendant monks should visit their preceptors and teachers three times a day. He also taught that the great boundary should be set at two and a half yojanas. Monks, if the preceptors and teachers are two and a half yojanas away, how should they visit them? Upāli, they should visit every half month. If they live far away, they should visit every seven or eight days. After that, they should visit on time. If they live five hundred bows away, they should visit three times a day. If they do not do so, they will be considered to have transgressed. The origin of the story is this: In Śrāvastī, a certain venerable Ānanda wanted to be ordained, but he was ordained without a bowl. At that time, the monks washed their bowls and placed them in the place where the bowls were placed, then prostrated to the stupa, took their own bowls, and went to the place where they ate. When the monks were eating, they washed their bowls and began to prostrate to the stupa, and the newly ordained also prostrated with them. When the monks had prostrated to the stupa and washed their hands, the newly ordained took the bowl of the elder Kauṇḍinya, and returned it. Then he took the bowls of Pūrṇa, Mahānāman, Aniruddha, Śāriputra, Maudgalyāyana, Kāśyapa, Ānanda, Revata, and others, and they all returned them. He stood alone to one side, like eyes filled with tears. Those monks who had not renounced desire rebuked him, saying, "Who ordained him without a bowl?" Some said, "It was Ānanda." They said, "Who else would do such a thing except one who commits a grave offense?" The monks told the Blessed One about this. The Blessed One taught: Monks, it is right that these people are rebuked. Therefore, monks, do not ordain anyone without a bowl. First give a bowl.
