Then the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, did you go forth thinking to attain Nirvana in my presence? The monks replied: Yes, Blessed One. Monks, therefore, those who have gone forth thinking to attain Nirvana in my presence are granted garments worth thousands of kotis, a tiered house with five hundred eyes, and food with a hundred flavors. Monks, those who have broken their vows are not allowed to use even a single heel of their feet in the monastery's pleasure garden. Why is that? Because a person who has broken their vows has these ten faults. What are these ten? The precepts condemn themselves, they are condemned by others, gods, and teachers, they are condemned by those who practice chastity, the wise, and by the nature of Dharma, evil and unpleasant sounds and verses will be proclaimed in all directions, those who have not realized will not realize, those who have realized will degenerate, those who have heard before will be forgotten, they will die regretting, and after separating from the body and dying, they will fall into evil destinies and evil paths, and be born in hell. However, monks, there are four kinds of use: ownerless use, use by giving, use by permission, and use by borrowing. Among these, those monks who are free from desire, hatred, and delusion are ownerless users. Those who still have remnants of attachment are users by giving. Ordinary individuals who are virtuous and engaged in contemplation and reading are users by permission. Those who are lazy are users by borrowing. Those who have broken their vows are not allowed any use at all. Therefore, if there is any gain, the Sangha should distribute it equally. This is the second verse of the second chapter of the "Extensive Explanation". In short: that which is spread and that which is not spread, that which is dug and that which is not dug, likewise, dwelling outside the boundary, through hearing, remembering, and thinking. When the Buddha, the Blessed One, was in Shravasti, in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's garden...

Residing in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: "Venerable Sir, when the Sangha is in retreat, if a bhikkhu deeply experiences the retreat, is it possible that it will not become a non-retreat?" Upali, yes, it is like this: when the Sangha is in retreat, if that bhikkhu does not give faith and falls asleep, the Sangha will be in retreat. Upali, in that case, a bhikkhu who deeply experiences the retreat will not become a non-retreat. Venerable Sir, is it possible that the Sangha, without deeply experiencing the retreat, will become a retreat? Upali, yes, if a bhikkhu, when the Sangha is in retreat, gives faith and falls asleep, the Sangha will also be in retreat. In that case, even if the Sangha does not deeply experience the retreat, it will become a retreat. Upali, similarly, when a bhikkhu is in retreat with the Sangha, if he gives faith and falls asleep or enters into meditation, even if he does not deeply experience it, it will become a retreat. Venerable Sir, when a bhikkhu is dissolving the Sangha's retreat, even if he experiences it, is it possible that the retreat will not be dissolved? Upali, yes, it is like this: when a bhikkhu is in retreat with the Sangha, if he does not give faith and falls asleep or enters into meditation. Upali, in that case, when a bhikkhu is dissolving the Sangha's retreat, even if he experiences it, the retreat will not be dissolved. Venerable Sir, when a bhikkhu is dissolving the Sangha's retreat, even if he does not experience it, is it possible that the retreat will be dissolved? Upali, yes, it is like this: when a bhikkhu is dissolving the Sangha's retreat, if he gives faith and falls asleep or enters into meditation, or even if he goes outside the boundary, and hears that the Sangha has dissolved the retreat, and after hearing it, he dissolves it well, he dissolves it completely, and rejoices in it. The third verse of the Sutra of the Second Chapter of the Vinaya Matters. In short, giving the precepts and the rules, and to whom the tasks should be done, and the twelve kinds of repeated transgressions, impurity, and disrespect.
