Declining Dharma, non-declining Dharma, secret Dharma, guarding Dharma, abiding unmoving, individually realizing and not becoming a fortunate one, unmoving Dharma, wisdom-liberated, and both-ways-liberated. These are called the nine types of non-learners. The Blessed One spoke thus. After the Sugata spoke thus, the Teacher further said: Those whose body, speech, and mind are upright, learners and non-learners, dwell in this world. They are worthy of giving and offering. Giving to that excellent field of offering yields great fruit. Then, the householder Anathapindika sat before the elderly sick person, having arranged the words, and at the time of speaking of the noble ones, said this: "Whatever Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of giving, supremely worthy of giving, worthy of joining palms, worthy of prostration, is the unsurpassed field of merit, is the worthy recipient of the world's offerings, offer these clothes to them, please accept them as you wish." Then, the reciting monk sat before the elderly sick person and said this: "Venerable Sangha, the Blessed One

It is appropriate to offer to the monastic community of the Hearers, it is appropriate to offer exceedingly, it is appropriate to join palms, it is appropriate to prostrate. They are the supreme fields of merit, the worthy recipients of the world. To those, please offer these clothes that have been obtained, please accept them as you wish. Then, those monks who are free from attachment, free from hatred, free from delusion, thought thus: The householder Anāthapiṇḍada said, "It is appropriate to offer to the monastic community of the Blessed One's Hearers, it is appropriate to offer exceedingly, it is appropriate to join palms, it is appropriate to prostrate, they are the supreme fields of merit, the worthy recipients of the world, please offer these clothes that have been obtained, please accept them as you wish." We are supreme, so we have the right to dispose of these possessions. The Blessed One said, "Monks, your virtues should be concealed, and your sins should be proclaimed." How could we praise ourselves for the sake of obtaining clothes? We are free from attachment, free from hatred, free from delusion. Having said this, they sat in silence. Those who still had remnants of defilements also thought thus: Because it is offered to the supreme, we still have remnants of defilements, we have no right to dispose. Thinking thus, they sat in silence. Those who were bound by all bonds thought thus: This is offered to the supreme. Thinking thus, they sat in silence. Those who still had remnants of defilements also sat in silence. We are bound by all bonds, so we have absolutely no right to dispose. Thinking thus, they also sat in silence. At that time, none of the monks accepted the clothes offered by the householder Anāthapiṇḍada. He thought, "Have the noble monastic community rejected my bowl?" Thinking thus, his body became pale, haggard, thin, withered, and even delirious. Then, he went to where the Blessed One was, approached the Blessed One, and bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One.

From there, they sat together in one place. After sitting together in one place, the householder Anathapindika reported the matter to the Blessed One. The Buddha, knowing full well, asked: The Buddha, the Blessed One, said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, the householder Anathapindika has offered robes to the monks, why have they not accepted them? Then (Ananda) rebuked (the monks). (The monks) said to the householder Anathapindika: Whatever is the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples, it is proper to give, most proper to give, to join palms in reverence, even if they give nothing, it is so. As before, they stated that in this way, not a single bhikkhu accepted what the householder Anathapindika had offered. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go, in Shravasti, gather all the bhikkhus who reside there into the assembly hall. Having said this, the venerable Ananda replied: Venerable One, as you command. The venerable Ananda listened to the Blessed One's instructions, and in Shravasti, gathered all the bhikkhus who resided there into the assembly hall, and then went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then sat in one place. After sitting in one place, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, Blessed One, now is the time, please be aware. In Shravasti, all the bhikkhus who reside there have gathered in the assembly hall. After reporting this, then, the Blessed One went to where the assembly hall was, and having arrived, sat on the prepared seat. After sitting down, the Blessed One said to the bhikkhus: Bhikkhus, the householder Anathapindika has gathered many robes to offer, why have you not accepted them? The bhikkhus remained silent. The Buddha, the Blessed One, knowing full well, asked: The Buddha, the Blessed One, again asked the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why are the bhikkhus not speaking? That is how it is, and it was also reported in detail to the Blessed One.
